GERMANY’S NEW MOTORWAYS
Writing on the occasion of the recent visit to Germany of 60 British M.P. s and over 150 representatives of British transport interests to inspect the famous State motor roads of Germany (Reichsautobahnen), the Berlin correspondent of the London Observer said:
When the first 14 miles section ot the new highways from Frankfurt to Darmstadt, was openea in May 1935 Herr Hitler made the proud ooast: “When the scheme is finished Germany will possess the most mode>*n net if motor roads in the world.” Since that date work on the roads has gone ,r----ward swiftly; 800 miles are now in use; 500 miles are under construction; 1250 miles are ready to be surveyed, while the full system of 4375 miles ought to be ready in seven years. Marching over hill and across dale, through for-
est and along mdors the new motor roads are the special onde of the Third Reich. Travellers coming to Germany in their own cars will agree mat they have solved and will solve the problem of combining perfect safety with speed for long-distance motor traffic While 120,000 men are permanently employed on the scheme, at one time 250,000 men were busy on the roads. As their name implies, the new roads are strictly limited to the use of motor traffic. Bicyclists and pedestrians are banned from them.
