A magnificent example of Maori carving has been deposited at the Wanganui Museum on loan for an indefinite period by a well-known Maori family of Utiku. It is a waka huia, two "feet in length and probably the largest of its kind in existence. It is richly carved all over and a perfect specimen of early Maori art. The waka huia was used by the Maoris as a receptacle for the treasured huia feathers which were worn in the hair on ceremonial occasions. There are several of these objects in the Wanganui Museum, but none to compare for size or decoration with the one received on loan. The action of the lenders is greatly appreciated by the museum trustees, who value highly loans or gifts of this nature, particularly when one considers the veneration and traditional regard in which these old heirlooms are held by their owners.
