NEWS IN BRIEF

" The milk in schools schem* is_a most popular innovation," reported Mr W. L. Wagstaff, headmaster of the New Plymouth West End School, to the School Committee last week. He stated that only seven pupils .did not take the milk, and it was not because they were " conscientious objectors. " It is all wrong to talk about a fracture as an injury to the brain," said Mr Justice Callan to a medical witness in the Supreme Court at Auckland the other day. "I thought I had better warn you," he added, smiling, " that at the moment I am full of knowledge about heads after a case I had the other day, though I shall probably forget all about it in a week." Sheepowners in the vicinity of Auckland continue to report losses du": to the ravages of dogs. One farmer at Papatoetoe discovered two dogs—a collie and a half bred Alsatian—among his flock one night last week. They had so severely mauled six ewes and lambs that they had to be destroyed. Both dogs were captured. Reference to early speculation in land at Bunnythorpe was made by a speaker at the golden jubilee banquet of the Bunnythorpe Methodist Church. He remarked that once it had been proposed to call the district "Mugby Junction." and as such was to be " the hub of the universe." In anticipation of that certain sections of land had been sold for as much as £lO0 —to be sold later for £5. Milton ladies are reminded of the " Berlei" display of foundation garments on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of this week. Miss Lucas is now at Gray's with a full range of these desirable articles... That the best way to improve the Bill would be to tear it up was the opinion expressed by the chairman (Mr W. G. Belton) at a meeting of the Patea County Council last week when a request was received for the opinions of the council on the Local Government (Amalgamation Scheme) Bill by the committee of the House set up to consider the Bill and bring down a report. Acting on a suggestion made at tb.3 annual meeting in Napier, the Automobile Association (Hawke's Bay) will seek the co-operation of its members in taking precautions against anything that may cause the farming community anxiety about the possibility of fires during the dry season. It was pointed out that many motorists had the careless habit of tossing lighted cigarettes out of their cars, without any thought of the possible consequences.

The School of Bakery organised by the Wheat Research Institute was officially opened at Christchurch last week by Mr C. E. Boon, a member of the Wheat Research Council, and himself a master baker. The director (Dr F. W. Hilgendorf) welcomed the students, and Mr H. R. Hansen, the instructor, outlined the work to be covered in the course. The course is free, and in some cases employers are paying the expenses of their bakers to enable them to attend. A number of additional applications for enrolment have come in. More than 50 bakers are waiting for admission, and rearrangements to enable a greater number of students to be accommodated at a time, would appear to be necessary. " It seems a little absurd to me that, when the Legislature deems it competent for a garage to issue a warrant of fitness for a vehicle, the garage should not have authority also to place the official sticker on the windshield," said Mr J. H. Edmundson, in his presidential address to the Automobile Association (Hawke's Bay) at the annual meeting in Napier. He went on to praise the provisions in the Motor Vehicles Amendment Act for the more rigid control of . pedestrians and cyclists. "Previously they were allowed to go just as they pleased, and the fault was always alleged to be with the motorist," he commented, adding that statistics showed that, actually, the fault was just as often with the pedestrian.

In the opinion of the Wellington Ratepayers' Association there is some justification for the complaints made recently about the collection of domestic refuse in Wellington. At a meeting of the association, a motion was carried urging the City Council to investigate the alleged delay in the collection of refuse, particularly in view of the summer months approaching. "It would go further and suggest that a ' clean-up week' early in December, similar to that which was organised by the civic authorises a year or so ago. and with excellent results from a public health point of view, be held," the motion adds. A souvenir copy of the loyal address forwarded by the Automobile Association on the occasion of the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth was received at a meeting of the executive of the South Island Motor Union the other evening. The souvenir is a large leather-bound volume inscribed in gold with the badge of the association, and contains photographs of the original address. The original is printed on vellum and illuminated in gold and royal blue—the Automobile Association's colours. It is enclosed in a leather-bound box and has been placed in the Royal Archives. Interesting arrivals at Cornwall Park. Hastings, recently, were four Chinese King quail, born to the proud occupants of one of the pens at the park. The young birds present an interesting sight when they can be induced to show themselves to visitors, being about an inch in length, of a dark colour, with a brown streak on the flank. A clutch of seven eggs was laid by the hen bird, but four only have hatched, these being the first of thenkind to be born in the park's aviary. The Chinese King quail somewhat resembles the Californian quail common in New Zealand, and is imported from Australia. .

Precautions necessary for the protection of British shipping at present in zones of warfare like the western end of the Mediterranean and in the East were described to a Manawatu Standard reporter recently by Mr J. R. Fer- \ guson, of Glasgow, a Scottish visitor who is on a tour of the world. He stated that the Blue Funnel Line vessel on which he travelled was escorted past Gibraltar by a Dutch destroyer, and that two submarines were sighted. A large Union Jack was placed on a hatch in order to disclose the nationality of the vessel to planes. Similarly, when she left Singapore, for the Far East, a large Union Jack was painted on her side.

Comment on the wholehearted observance of religious services on the Sabbath in the very early days of Bunnythorpe was made by a speaker at the jubilee banquet of the Bunnythorpe Methodist Church, the other evening. He spoke of the difficulties of transport which had to be faced and said that, when the Methodist population of the district had been considerably larger than it is now, it had been usual to see congregations as large as those at the jubilee services. Whole families attended, and even two carts were employed to transport some families where nowadays a two-seater car was ample.
