BURIED IN PUMICE TRENCH COUNTY SURFACEMAN KILLED iPeh United Press Association) TAUMARUNUI. Oct. 27. A Kaitieke County surfaceman, Thomas Francis Hogan, aged 52 years, was killed this morning while working in a pumice trench 9ft 6in deep at the junction of two roads about U miles from Raurinu. Hogan and another surfaceman, Harold Cole, were preparing the trench to replace a wooden culvert with a concrete one when one side of the trench fell in. Cole managed to. jump clear, but the deceased was buried in pumice to a depth of several feet. Cole immediately gave the alarrn to a settler and telephone messages brought help from all directions. Cole meanwhile commenced the rescue work. Twenty-five minutes passed before the rescuers uncovered Hogan, and he was dead when removed from the trench. An inquest was opened this afternoon at Taumarunui and was adjourned sine die. The deceased had been five years in the county councils employ and he formerly .lived at Owhango. He leaves a widow and eight children. HEAD INJURIES George McMaster, a single man who resides at Tomahawk, was admitted to Hospital at 5.40 last evening suffering from head injuries, caused when he fell while working at the Hillside Workshops. MAHENO MOTOR SMASH On inquiries being made at the Oamaru Public Hospital yesterday afternoon as to the condition of Mr Philip Ruston, who was involved in the motor car smash at Maheno on October 19, it was learnt that he had made an improvement. A FRACTURED ARM When she fell at her home last evening, Annie Crawford, an elderlywoman, who lives at Brighton road, Green Island, suffered a fractured right arm. She was admitted to Hospital at 7.45. INFANT'S SERIOUS INJURIES Davy Fraser, a 15-months-old child, who lives with his parents at 141 Bay View road, was admitted to Hospital at 9 o'clock last evening suffering from head injuries, the result of a fall at his home on Tuesday night. His name has been placed on the seriously-ill list.
