Beau Fere Beau Pere came into the limelight as I sire in connection with the Wellington spring meeting. Oamaru Jockey Club's Programme At a meeting of the Oamaru Jockey Club, the programme for the New Year meeting was approved, the total amount in stakes decided on being £I2OO. Protector Protector was too sore at Wellington to show anything like hi» real racing merit. An Oversight Royal Order has apparently been left In the New Zealand Derby by. an overBight. .: '-:..-'' ;"; •; Oratory ■ Oratory retains'tier speed, and was responsible for the Pearce Handicap being run in particularly fast time. Small Boy Small Boy did not race at Trentham up to the expectations based on his win in the Mitchelson'Cup. A Sporting Bet Some sporting bets have been made that Royal Chief will, beat Smoke Screen when they meet again. Ordinary Some "horses are only rather ordinary horses because' they have below ordinary riders in the saddle. Silver Streak Silver Streak was asked to .mix it at Wellington by racing over 11 furlongs and six furlongs, and missed at both distances. ' ,y Cuddle Cuddle is by no means a back number in the racing business. She ran two solid races at Wellington. Kinnoull Kinnoull appeared to stand ,up to racing on fairly hard going at Trentham without showing signs of unsoundness. Delrain Sold A few months ago Mr J. R. McMurray, of Gore, purchased the aged gelding Delrain in the North Island but without racing him in Southland has passed him on to Mr A. Ferguson, of DnMlri, well known ,as the owner of McHeath, Pink Robe, and Sea Fox Delrain is actually nine years old, and was got by Walkyrian from Delpeen, by Spalpeen from Delenda. by Obliby Seaton Delaval— Campania. He has some good performances on the flat and as a hurdler, and it is likely that his new owner will keep him at the latter branch of the sport . \ ' : ; ; Imnjipfemeat'-'r, ; '* ■ . Af*the■ .Wellington spring " : meeting dividends on £1 and 10s tickets were at the same window, and greatly expedited payments after each race/ P-v/al Chief r-«yal Chief has pace and stays well, and it will take a good one to beat him during the balance of the season. NM in the Limelight Som« of those in favour for the New Zealand Cup and Stewards did not rr?->2ar in the limelight at recent meetings. Royal Minstrel Nigger Minstrel gelding, Royal Minstrel, who won a double at Wellington, is a half-brother to Mr J. M. F.ifnson's Cleaner, now at the Elders- - 1 :? stud. T--> Row

'"'-".re ig not much of Too Row, and h" shapes b'st when acting under ,a l { '-'ht weight, even if the company r.;ms a bit select for his class. C"?en of Song f".' of Song experienced a rough p' ~*e in the Pearce Handicap, or v- otherwise have been much c'- er to the money at the finish A Field If recent form is a real guide to a cY'n?e of winning, then room for shrinkage exists in connection with the fiid '. ' the New Zealand Cup. B'ofate- • - Dictate was unlucky in the Pearce Handicap. He was last away, and did ws'l to finish a close third in lmin 30sec. Dictate may get amongst the winners at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Catalogue s Catalogue put up a good performance in the Wainui Handicap by giving weight to Kinnoull and keeping him busy to wir in lmin 37.?secv Alma Alma' showed herself to be in racing shape by winning at G-pre. According to some opinions Alma did not- win so well as expected, but, nevertheless, won under a big weight in fairly smart time. , Dr Gilmer A popular figure in Wellington sporting circles was lost at the death of Dr H A H. Gilmer, which occurred in England. He was for many years a steward of the Wellington Racing Club. The Best Test When a slow stayer is .travelling along on the bit the pace can be taken as too slow even if the watch, owing to fast track and atmospheric conditions, reads records. The opposition in the field may and can be a better test;than the watch... Surmount The Surveyor colt Surmount was made a better favourite than Amigo for the Roseneath Handicap, but the latter proved rather too good for him. Surmount's dam Cometary was got by Day Comet—The Boyne, by Memwee —The Shannon, by Torpedo. A Solid Filly The Lord Warden filly Ortyx stood up to three hard races at Trentham, and in the final start led most of the way from Amigo and Surmount. Amigo won in 58sec, and Ortyx was less than two lengths away. Amigo The Beau Pere two-year-old gelding Amigo who won a double at Wellington was produced by Adorable, a mare bv Limond from Admyra, by Solfenno —Temba, by Sainfoin—lsalian Beauty, by Desmond from Marietta. Kollicker The Hunting Song gelding Rollicker ■was much too good for the opposition in the Tararua Handicap, and should be noted for the future. His dam, Comedienne, was got by Joculator—Lady D, by St. Denis—Lady C. by Ladas—St. Cecilia, by St. Denis. A Good Sort The three-year-old Acre gelding Suleiman created a very favourable impression by the manner in which he scored at Trentham. He is a halfbrother to Namakia. Their dam, Qmnkairia; was got by Quin Abbey—Kakama, by Soult—Winsome, by Cuirassier.

Laughing Lass Laughing Lass finished sixth in the Shorts Handicap and the race evidently improved her as she won in good stvle on the final day. Laughing Lass was unplaced in the Stewards' Handicap run last year and finished third to Top Notch and Cerne Abbas in the Oaks Stakes.

Pacemaking Cuddle may run her best races in front of the field and so do many other horses when they can hold up the pace. It is generally a different story according to setting a slow pace or a fast pace. In the Wellington Handicap Cuddle, with 9.9. just failed in the last stride in 2min 17sec (record 2min 163 sec) and with the same pacemaking tactics failed again in the Harcourt Stakes won in 2min 3|sec. The results suggest that Cuddle should be tried to wait and not to set the pace.

Linguist Linguist stayed on well when she won at Gore over a mile and a-quarter and comes into consideration as a New Zealand Cup candidate. Linguist is now a six-year-old mare' got by a sire of stayers in Paladin from Countersign by Paper Money—Kilberry, by Kilbroney—Success, by The OfficerContent, by Dreadnought—Lullaby, by Apremont—Hammock. It may not be regarded as a staying ledigree on the (Jam's side because Paper Money becomes prominent, but Kilbroney, The Officer, Dreadnought and Apremont all represent plenty of stamina.
