METROPOLITAN FIRE BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Dunedin Metropolitan Fire Board was held at the Central Fire Station yesterday afternoon, when there were present: Messrs W. W. Callender (in the chair), J. Robinson, E. H. Ferguson, L. G. Wilson, J. Wilson, and N. D. Anderson. FINANCIAL Accounts amounting to £1446 18s 8d were passed for payment. SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT The superintendent (Mr R. H. Price) submitted the following report on the work for the month: Calls Attended.—Fires, 7; chimney fires, 28; rubbish and bush, 5; false alarms—malicious 6, justifiable 6, automatic 4, accidental 2; —total, 58. South Dunedin attended 14 calls, Roslyn 11, Green Island 1, Mosgie l . none. Serious Fireg,—The only serious fire during the month was that which occurred on September 27 at 2 Short street, gutting the outhouses and destroying contents of some value. Causes of Fires.—Defective chimney 1, defective fireplace 2, ignition of kinernatograph film 1, kerosene lamp 1, overheating of coal 1. short circuit 1; — total, 7. Properties Affected.—Attached outhouse 1, boiler-house 1, detached outhouse 1, dwellings 2, motor vehicle 1, canvas tent 1; —total, 7. Chimney Fires Attended.—Central 12, South dunedin 7. Roslyn 9;—total, 28.

Staff and Plant—The staff is at full strength ' and the members have been engaged in routine duties such as station work, physical drills, practices, plug inspection, and street and automatic fire alarms tests As from September 1, the men have been working under modified conditions, and the innovation has so far proved quite satisfactory. The plant Ir in good order. All machines have been subjected to the oil-annual examination for warrants of fitness, which have been granted in each case. Sub-stations.—The staffs of the South Dunedin, Roslyn, and Green Island stations have been brought to the Central Station for drill, and a visit was made to Mosgiel to witness that section of the brigade at its monthly practice. Pressure at the various stations between the hours of 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. has 'besn as follows:—Central, 801 b and 1001 b; South Dunedin, 951 b and 1251 b; Roslyn, 1251 b and 1251 b.
