CHORAL SOCIETY'S CONCERT
SOME OUTSTANDING ITEMS Elsewhere in this issue is published the full programme of the Choral Society's concert, which will be presented to-night in the Town Hall. No pains have been spared to make the evening an enjoyable one, and with the aid of a specially strengthened orchestra and a group of soloists, Mr Alfred Walmsley is confident of the success of the programme he is to conduct. BOth chorus and orchestra will have a full evening, but recent rehearsals have shown that they have mastered the various pieces on the programme. It is a concert'in which each item unusual interest, and, probably the most important item will be the Sea Symphony." the first symphony written entirely for chorus and orchestra. Composed by Dr Vaughan Williams and based on the poems of Walt Whitman, the work, besides being really good music, is most attractively suggestive of its title. Temple Bevans "Hell Gate" (on Housman's poem) is receiving its first public presentation to-night, and a popular Russian group is headed by " Coronation Scene " from Moussorgsky's "Boris Godounov," said to be the greatest of Russian operas. Patrons will also be able to enjoy the serenity of Brahms's "Song of Destiny,", the rippling and lilting Choral Fantasia" of Beethoven (with' Miss Mavis Macdonald taking the solo part) and two chorales by Bach. The Training College Women's Choir, under Mr G. Wilkinson, will contribute a special effect in the symphony, in which Miss Betty Pocock and Mr John Pnngle Will do important solo work. The fact that the Pluriket Society's Buildihg Fund.is to benefit from the proceeds of this concert should commend it to a. wide public. Booking arrangements are advertised.
