PROVINCIAL BANDS

CONTEST AT DUNEDIN COMPLETION OF ARRANGEMENTS A provincial band contort will be held in Dunedin on Saturday, November 13. A meeting of the committee which is arranging the contest was held yesterday, when there were present Messrs J. H. Walker (chairman), H. Harris, J. D. Hunter, D. C. Jolly, E. T. Moller and E. S. Wilson.

The secretary submitted a list of entries received for the contest. This read as follows:

Pipe Band Contest. —Dunedin Highland Pipe Band, North Otago Pipe Bahd, Mataura Kilties' Band, Gore Pipe Band, Momona Pipe Band, Caledonian Pipe Band (Southland), Wyndham Pipe Band, Taieri Pipe Band, Balclutha Pipe Band and Palmerston Pipe Band.

B. Grade Brass Bands.—Green Island Municipal Band, Mosgiel Municipal Band, Artillery Band (Southern Command). Ist Battalion Southland Regiment Band, St. Joseph's Band, Otago Mounteds' Band, Oamaru Municipal Band, Gore Municipal Band. C. Grade Brass Bands.—Port Chalmers Municipal Band. West Harbour Brass Band.

The quickstep contest will consist of selections chosen by the individual bands and will be held at Carisbrook. The selections will be heard in His Majesty's Theatre in the evening. Mr W. H. Osborne, of Ashburton, has been appointed judge of the brass bands and Mr J. A. Patterson, of Christchurch, of the pipe bands. Mr J. Erskine, of Christchurch, has been appointed handicapper of the pipe bands, Mr D. McKechnie, judge of dress, Mr R. B. Meek, supervisor of pipe bands, Mr J. D. Hunter, supervisor of brass bands, and Mr E.

Kerr, judge of instruments for the brass bands. Captain Kernohan was appointed timekeeper. Messrs D. C. Jolly and E. T. Moller were appointed marshals. It was resolved to ascertain whether the pipe bands would be able to provide a massed display at the conclusion of the quickstep selections.

The secretary reported that the Military Department was arranging for the military judges. It was resolved that the bands should assemble at the Queen's Gardens at 1.15 p.m. on the day of the contest and march to Carisbrook. It was left in the hands of the secretary to arrange for tents and gatemen and for the erection of a judge's box at the theatre.
