UNAWARE OF FIRE

OUTBREAK IN ADJOINING ROOM NOTICED BY PASSING MOTORIST (Special to Daily Times) AUCKLAND, Oct. 25. To sit unconcernedly in the kitchen with three children while an outbreak of fire assumed serious proportions in an adjoining room was the experience of Mrs H. E. W. Southey, wife of a farmer, in the Katikati district, about 12 miles south of Waihi. Clouds of smoke rising from the house were noticed by a passing motorist, Mr Frank Brewer, of Auckland, who found Mrs Southey in complete ignorance of the fact that a fire had broken out. One room was too full of smoke to enable Mr Brewer and other helpers to enter and it was found necessary to break a hole in the roof. The top of an adjoining tank was torn off and the flames were extinguished by the use of buckets. The damage was confined to one wall of the room, but a quantity of clothing and rugs was destroyed.
