LABOUR DAY PICNIC

OUTING TO MOSGIEL FAVOURABLE WEATHER CONDITIONS The forty-eighth anniversary picnic and sports gathering conducted by the Otago Labour Day Association was held at the Mosgiel Recreation Ground yesterday. Weather conditions were almost perfect, although a strong northerly breeze hindered some of the events. Nevertheless, the enthusiasm of the large attendance kept the sports programme moving at a brisk and entertaining pace. It was estimated that almost 700 people were present, and their active co-operation in the various sporting events may be judged by the number of-entries. In the Men’s Cycle Race there were no fewer than 68 entrants, and in the Boys’ Potato Race there were 48 competitors. Almost 200 cyclists took part in the “ bike-hike ” organised by Calder Mackay and Co. The participants left Dunedin at 10.30 a.m. and, aided by the wind were in Mosgiel in excellent time. The officers in charge of the proceedings were the president (Mr J. A. Carman), and Messrs J. Ross, C. W. Conley, E. Agnew, A. Grogan, W. A. Walker and M. J. Kelly.
