ANGRY MAORI WOMAN
MAN ATTACKED WITH STICK REMOVAL OF FENCE DISPUTED (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND. Oct. 23. Orakei, a Maori village near Auckland, was the scene of a personal combot between an elderly Maori woman armed with a stick and an employee of the Lands Department, who started to remove a fence which encloses three Native residences near the church and cemetery site. . It is understood that the purpose of the removal was to prepare for a roadway to provide through access to the new Government houses on the hills above the Maori villagg. Some year’s ago the Maori lands op which the village stands were sold to the Government, but the Natives continue to live there. The matter was mentioned recently in the Native Land Court.
When a workman commenced to remove the fence staples on Thursday last, a stalwart elderly Maori woman protested vigorously and. this proving ineffective, she set upon-the workman with a stick. After an ineffectual defensive fight, it is stated, he withdrew somewhat the worse for the encounter and the work has not since been resumed.
