CRICKET

FIRST GAMES COMPLETED OLD BOYS IN THE LEAD OUTRIGHT WIN AGAINST ALBION Conditions for the second day's play in the first series of matches in the Otago Cricket Association's grade competitions on Saturday were by no mearts as pleasant as those of the previous week. The weather was dull and cold, and there was light rain early in the afternoon. It cleared before play started, and the outfields soon dried out under the influence of a keen south-westerly wind.. Grange and Dunedin resumed their matches against Kalkorai and Carisbrook A respectively with the confidence of big scores on the first day, but the only side to force an outright win was Old Boys Albion had scored only 89 in its first innings and a total of 130 in the second innings left Old Boys 26 to get for a full win This was accomplished for the loss of one wicket. Grange dismissed Kaikorai for 208, of which A. T. Anderson and G. McGregdr scored 62 and 40 respectively, but could not get the hill team out again in time for an outright win. the board showing 139 for eight wickets (R. Cherry 50) at stumps. C. Elmes and T. Chettleburgh each took seven wickets in the afternoon, but the feature of the afternoon’s play was Grange’s splendid work in the field. Grange won on the first innings by 242 runs. It was difficult to find gaps anywhere, and the catching and ground work were first class. Dunedin declared with 304 for seven wickets against Carisbrook A. but had to be satisfied with a firstinnings win by 137 runs. Carisbrook's reply was 167, T. Fraser batting well for 70. and 156 for five wickets, Fraser again shaping well for 34. and K. Cox batting aggressively for 79 not out. University could not get Carisbrook B out twice in time for an outright win, and its first-innings score of 86 was big enough to give it a win by 35 runs. University scored 151 in its second innings, Lawson getting 42 not out, and captured eight Carisbrook wickets for 117 (Mac Gibbon 39). OLD BOYS V. ALBION Although there was a good wicket for Albion in its second innings in the match against Old Boys, the first four batsmen were dismissed comparatively cheaply. The first wicket to fall was Miller’s—one for two. There were three wickets down for 23. Ditchfleld, who went out l.b.w. from Groves’s bowling, '.it five excellent 4’s. Good fielding by Colvin resulted in Beckingham being run out after compiling a useful 38 runs. The scoring was low, and the innings closed for 130 runs. High School went in with only 26 to get in order to win the game. Only one man went out. Mills, who was stumped by Byers. GRANGE v. KAIKORAI / With 450 runs on the board for eight wickets at the close of the first day’s play on the North ground Grange declared and left Kaikorai with a formidable task on the second day. The hill side did not start well, losing Holden’s wicket before a run had been scored. Galland snapping up a typical catch. McGregor helped Cherry to improve the position, and the pair took the total past 50 before Cherry was out. Talbot started confidently but did not stay long, hitting all over a ball from Knight. McGregor was shaping well, driving powerfully, and his 40 was a good innings. He hit six fours. None of the partnerships was lasting very lon« the Grange bowling being varied and mostly very steady and Ihe fielding being first class. Anderson kept things going for nearly two hours, giving no chances and hitting a six and nine fours in his 62 Constable’s 20 comprised five fours all powerful hits. Cook, the last man in, had a merry knock, taking heavy toll of Chettleburgh’s spinners, apd his 30 included six fours. The innings closed just after 4.30 for 208. The second innings also began badly, and it was Cherry who settled down and was mainly responsible for an outright defeat being avoided. The light was not good at this stage, and he batted very solidly and confidently. Scott, also, was very sound, but the other batsmen did not settle down at all and at stumps eight wickets were lost for 139 runs. Elmes and Chettleburgh secured most of the wickets between .them, but all the bowlers were helped' greatly by fine fielding. Grange won on the first innings by 242 runs Details:— GRANGE First innings (eight wickets declared) 450

DUNEDIN v. CARISBROOK A Dunedin secured a first innings victory against Carisbrook A in their match at Tonga Park. On the previous Saturday Dunedin had amassed 304 runs for seven wickets, and they were satisfied on Saturday to stand on this score, and to send Carisbrook to the wickets. The Carisbrook batsmen did not shape very well to the Dunedin bowling, and were all out at the tea adjournment for 167. Fraser was the only batsman to make a solid showing for his side, and his 70 runs and 28 extras were the highest scores in the innings. Fraser hit six fours, and played an invaluable innings for the A team. The bowling honours were equally divided between Douglas, Robertson and Macassey. with the lastnamed securing the best average. Carisbrook commenced their second innings at 4.35 p.m., and had lost five wickets at stumps for 156 runs. A sound innings by Cox. whose score of 79 included 10 fours, saved his side, and Fraser played another excellent innings for 34. Cox’s driving was strong and well limed, and he was unconquered at the end of the afternoon's play. The batting of the other Carisbrook A men was not very impressive. UNIVERSITY v. CARISBROOK B The final day’s play in the match between University and Carisbrook B at the University Oval on Saturday resulted in the former team scoring a five-point win on the first innings. University, with no wickets for 17 runs, resumed its second innings and declared at 3.45 p.m. with seven wickets down for 151 runs. Carisbrook replied with 117 for the loss of eight wickets when play ceased at 6.30. . Although improved batting displays were given by members of both teams, the wicket was far from being helpful either to batsmen or bowlers, and this militated against any cricket of a sparkling nature. Alpiost bare of turf, the wicket had larige cracks in it from end to end. Several players lost their wickets from balls which never rose an inch after striking the ground. Of the University batsmen. Lawson was the most aggressive, and many of his rups came from well-placed drives Uttley was shaping nicely when he was brilliantly caught at point by McMullen. whose smart fielding was also responsible for the dismissal of Dunn. Howden was a little shaky at the start, but he quickly settled down and attacked the bowling with vigour. Overeagerness brought his attractive display to a close when he was run out through calling on his' partner to run an impossible single. . Mac Gibbon gave a sound display for Carisbrook. He batted for an hour and three-quarters to score 39. McMullan timed his drives nicely and put plenty of power into his strokes. Little, M’Kelvey, and Uttley shared the bowling honours for University, and Kerr and'Lambert bore the brunt of the attack for Carisbrook. Scores: — UNIVERSITY First innings • - ■ ■ 86
