WAIMATE TOURNAMENT FIRST DAY’S PLAY (Special to Daily Times) WAIMATE, Oct. 24. The Waimate Lawn Tennis Club’s jubilee tournament was opened yesterday afternoon in fine but threatening weather, rain commencing to fall at dusk. The fixture was officially opened by Mr George Dash in his dual capacity of Mayor and president of the Tournament Committee. The early rounds of the Men’s Open Championship saw no major upsets, and C. Angas, ex-Dominion champion, and H. A. Barnett (Canterbury) played themselves into the final with convincing wins. The most interesting match in the Women’s Championships was the meeting of Miss T. Poole (Christchurch) and Mrs C. J. Rawlin■>on (Dunedin), Miss Poole winning 6—l, 6—5. She followed this up by defeating Miss R. Wilson (Southland) in the third round 6—2, 3—6, 6—o. Miss D. Miller (Oamaru) had an easy victory over Miss I. Poole, winning 6 —l, 6—2.
