DREARY VIGIL

After 13 weeks of “ mothering countless birds of all sorts on the lonely Fame Islands, off the Northumberland coast, four Seahouses fishermen recently returned to their homes. They were Messrs Bob Archbald, Tom Gresham, Alec Cormack, and David Cormack, and they have been “bird watching” on the islands and protecting rare birds who find sanctuary there from other birds of prey. They were also concerned with protecting young birds, and most of this year’s hatchings are now on the wing. “It has been a particularly dreary vigil this year owing to the bad weather,” Tom Gresham stated. “ There seemed to be more birds than ever this year, and many of last year’s eider ducks returned to nest. “After long years of experience we can almost recognise the individual birds, for year after year they seem to nest in the same places.”
