Jack Hides and David Lyell were leading an exploring expedition in Papua when Lyell fell ill. Hides decided to dash for the coast down the Fly River. He had practically to carry Lyell a considerable disThe members of the party were attacked by beriberi. Five natives died and 22 others who were suffering from the disease were helpless. Hides took the risk of rafting the party through a gorge and ran into a tidal bore, losing the canoe and everything in it. The remainder of the journey was made under terrible conditions. Lyell is in a critical condition.
