" PROSPEROUS"
CONDITIONS IN DOMINION EFFECTS OF FORTY-HOUR WEEK MR ARMSTRONG AT GENEVA (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) GENEVA, June 21. (Received June 22, at 5.5 p.m.)
"If you vote against the 40-hour week of the textile industry you are hopeless," said Mr H. T. Armstrong, the New Zealand delegate, during a debate at the Textile Convention at the International Labour Office. ." When the hours were reduced to 40 a week in New Zealand," Mr Armstrong continued, " income increased by 20 per cent, amounting to £14,000,000 a year and resulting in the demand for goods increasing enormously."
New Zealand was prosperous today, Mr Armstrong said, because of the increased spending power of the community. In addition tens of thousands of boys and girls leaving school were now absorbed in industry instead of walking the streets. "The Conservatives would not dare repeal the 40-hour week," Mr Armstrong declared.
