TO THE EDITOR Sir,—Sufficient tirrie has now elapsed since the introduction of the 40-hour week and higher wages to enable us to Judge of the results. I know of numbers of cases where families are worse off than previously, the increases in prices having overtaken the rise in wages, and the added spending facilities offered by the leisure afforded as a result of the 40-hour week accentuate this aspect. Whether this is a subtle move on the part of the Government to secure more revenue I am not prepared to say. but the phenomenal increase in totalisator investments and the additional amount of drinking at week-ends would lend credence to this view. The Government has stated that increased wages would confer no benefit if prices were to rise, yet it has put into effect a policy which can have no other result.—l am. etc.. What Next?
