WIMBLEDON CHAMPIONSHIPS CRAWFORD DEFEATS MENZEL LONDON, June 21 (Received June 22. at 5.5 p.m.; The All-England Lawn Tennis Championships commenced at Wimbledon to-day Players from 27 nations are present at the tournament The biggest feature of the day after Crawford's defeat of Menzel was the victory of Eede's. a young South African, over De Stefani. His win was partly due to his robust service.

Lysaght surprisingly took a set trum von Cramm. but once the German became familiar with the grass surface the Englishman was doomed. All the seeded players in the Men's Singles, with the exception of Menzel, games. Crawford defeated Menzel by three sets to two Crawford's backhand was working perfectly in the early sets, and his forehand placements were also fine, but Menzel caused him worry with his hard service and heavy top-spin drives. Both played clever tennis, but the similarity of tactics tended to dullness. The match lasted 2 hours 20 minutes.

Bromwich, making his first appearance at Wimbledon, was opposed only by a good club player. The Australian was not very convincing in his play r M'Grath started shakily and was unable to find a reply to Ellmer's steadiness However he found touch in the second set. and thereafter outDlayed his Swiss opponent. Playing on adjoining courts late in the evening, Coombe and Stedman had comparatively easy wins. Andrews will meet Crawford in the second round. Coombe will meet M'Grath. and Stedman will meet Nigel Sharpe.
