COUNCIL’S MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Waihemo County Council was held at Palmerston yesterday, and was attended by Crs D. Ross (chairman), J, O’Connell, W. Matheson, A. Purvis, G. Ross, D. J. Ireland, W. Ritchie and G. A. Sutherland. FIXING OF RATES Notice of motion was given to fix the rates at the next meeting at id for the hospital and id for the general rate, making a total of Id in the £. The hospital rate is thus reduced by id from last year. FINANCE Accounts amounting to £499 3s Id were passed for payment. Auctioneers' licence fees amounting to £77 and goldfields revenue for March and April at £49 10s fid were received. The town clerk of Oamaru forwarded a cheque for £ls 19s Id, being the council’s proportion of heavy traffic fees for the year ended May 31.—Received. CORRESPONDENCE

The Main Highways Board’s representative replied regarding the Goodwood Junction road that the work would be carried out only If the council contributed one-quarter of the cost. —The letter was received and referred to the council’s representative on the District Highways Council (Cr Matheson). „ „ The district engineer (Mr P. Keller) wrote stating that he was prepared to recommend a £1 for £1 subsidy towards the metalling of F. Hayes’s road at Moonlight if the side drains were cleaned out. —It was decided that in the meantime the ditches should be cleaned out, and the matter of gravelling the road was held over. Another letter from Mr Keller stated that it had been recommended that railway level crossings should be tarsealed for a distance of one chain on either side, owing to stones being left on the lines after graders had passed. Several derailments, he stated, had been ascribed to this cause. The council could carry out the work In its districts as opportunity offered.—-Re-reived. GENERAL The clerk was Instructed to send letters of sympathy to the relatives of Mr W. M’Gregor, who had been a clerk to the council, and Mrs Hocking (DunThe ranger (Mr B. Dyer) reported that 11 beasts had been found wandering on the roads during the month, and three had been impounded.. The matter of the road leading to professor L. Galli’s property at Macrae’s was left in the hands of Crs D’Connell and Sutherland and the inSP Pennission was granted to Mr R. F. Hay (Deep Dell) to erect two 12-foot gates on his new fence, during the pleasure of the council. INSPECTOR’S REPORT

' The ’lnspector (Mr A. M’Williams) reported on work done during the month, which included the following:— Macrae’s Riding.—General surface work had been done from Macrae s to Moonlight. Metal and gravel had been raked in and maintenance gravel spread between Macrae’s and Heffernan’s, and the road graded. General surface work had been done on Hartfield, Macrae’s to Hyde, Butter and Egg, and Nenthorn roads. Bates and Pound roads had had gravel laid on. Dunback Riding. Maintenance gravel had been spread on several portions of Stoneburn road, and a bad place on Jamieson’s road had been gravelled. Gravel had been graded in on the Sweetwater Creek road, and water tables and culverts attended to The channel had been scooped out and general surface work done at Black Pinch. Scarifying and grading and the spreading of maintenance gravel had been carried out from Bowker s to Dunrobin. Grange bridge had been gravelled. . _ , , Green Valley Riding.—Culverts and potholes had been repaired on Pringle’s road, _ , , , , Bushey Riding—The decking and beams had been repaired on a small bridge on the Puketapu road, two culverts attended to, and gravel spread in places on this road. General surface work had been carried out on Horse Range, Walsh’s, and Norths roads, and footnlanks were replaced at North’s crossing. Gravel had been graded in and water tables cleaned on the Palmerston-Bushey highway. - Goodwood Riding. Maintenance gravel had been spread on Sutherland's road, and the road and culvert repaired where a traction engine had damaged them. Running planks on the Pleasant River bridge had been repaired and replaced where necesS3TV Blue Mountain Riding.—Footplanks had been replaced on Wedges, M’Kean’s, Jones’s, and Cook’s crossings and these had been repaired. General surface work had been done and maintenance gravel spread on Horse Range, Old Bach, Switchback, and Janet’s Peak roads. _ The culvert had been repaired on Limekiln road, but would require renewing later. Limekiln, M’Lew’s, and Switchback roads were graded. Meadowbank Riding.—Scarifying and grading had been done, and maintenance gravel laid from O’Neill’s to Bowker’s bridge. Gravel had been spread and raked in on Taieri Peak road, and Nimmo’s road had been regraded. , , . The report was adopted.
