THE KARITANE HOSPITAL
NEW BUILDING ESSENTIAL The Karitane-Harris Hospital at Anderson's Bay was the first Karitane baby hospital and training centre of Plunket nurses in New Zealand. That was in 1907. Dunedin has remained the headquarters of the society. The building, an old wooden structure, is costing in upkeep and repairs exorbitant sums, and consequently a new building is necessary. The estimated cost is £20,000, and is being raised by voluntary effort. Just on £7OO has already been given, and an additional £IOOO has been allocated from the Nuffield Fund, provided the new building is commenced within the next 12 months. Last year 559 mothers and 1151 babies were in residence in the society's baby hospitals, and 161,481 homes were visited by Plunket nurses.
Donations will be accepted at the Otago Daily Times Office, and even the most moderate amount will be gratefully received.
