Miss Florence Miles is making a holiday visit to Samoa.

Mrs W. Luke, of Wellington, spent Thursday in Dunedin, prior to departing to Noumea. * * * Mr and Mrs C. W. Rattray left by the Monowai last week to spend a holiday at the Islands.

Mrs W. F. Edmond, who is visiting Mrs J. L. Hazlett, of Orcti, will return home during the week-end.

Mrs Leslie Burt has returned to Christchurch, accompanied by Mrs James Burt, who will be her guest for a few days.

On Tuesday Miss Gunn, retiring president of the Leith Ladies’ Bowling Club, entertained the members at the Vedic Tea Rooms. Miss Florence Pacey gave a picture party, followed by a supper party, at the Savoy on Thursday evening, for the members of the Dunedin Repertory Society who had acted for her in “Tangled Skeins” at the society's last social evening. Her guests were Misses Betty Rhodes, Roberta White, Pat Strachan, Rodney Moir, and Norma Bain, and Messrs S Jacobs and Max Wilson, who greatly delighted their hostess by presenting her with a large bouquet of flowers.

There was a large attendance at the monthly meeting of the Maori Hill League of Mothers on Thursday, Mrs R. L. Fairmaid presiding. Several new members were admitted to membership. Sister Nicolson gave a practical talk on “Home Nursing,” and gave many simple hints which would be helpful to mothers. The choir sang “In Derry Vale,” and songs were sung by Mrs Naylor. Mrs T. F. Basire proposed a vote of thanks to Sister Nicolson and Mrs Naylor, which was heartily accorded by all present.

The annual meeting of the Kaituna Ladies’ Bowling Club was held in the Eavilion on Wednesday, when the memers were the guests of the retiring president, Mrs Abel. The new committee was elected as follows: —Mrs Robinson, president; Mrs Cameron, vice-president; Mrs Jeffery, secretary; and Mesdames Campbell, Fullerton, and Leech and Miss Melville, committee. The winner of the Championship Singles last season was Mrs Shepherd, with Mrs Jeffery runner-up. and the Championship Doubles were won by Mesdames Walker and Hamer.

The St. Andrew's Collegiate School Ex-pupils’ Club held its annual meeting and club evening in the Tudor Lounge of the Savoy on Wednesday evening. In the absence of Miss Essie Moloney, chairwoman, Mrs F. E. Clapperton presided. Mrs N. Y. A. Wales, Mrs Eric Miller, and Miss Stella Smith were elected to the committee, with Miss Phyllis Moore as honorary treasurer, and Miss Mary Anderson as honorary secretary. A pleasant social two hours followed, those contributing to the musical programme being Miss Ruth Moore (pianoforte solos) and Mrs Eric Miller (vocal solos).

The monthly meeting of the Milton branch of the League of Mothers was held on June 12. Mrs Sinclair (president) occupied the chair. Mrs Herbert accepted the office of secretary during Mrs M’Callum’s absence abroad. Sister Russell gave an enjoyable and instructive address on the many different conditions and customs in existence in China. This proved a desirable subject from one so capable of relating various experiences. Mrs James Gray, in a few well-chosen words, thanked Sister Russell and the hostesses for the afternoon. Warm appreciation of Mrs S. M. Park’s 12 years’ service as a member of the Otago High Schools’ Board was expressed to her during a short interlude at the last meeting of the board, when opportunity was taken to present her with an enlarged framed photograph of the board, as constituted during her last year of office. The presentation was made by Dr G. E. Thompson, who was chairman during practically the whole of Mrs Park’s term of office, and who was supported by the acting chairman, Mr J. C. H. Somerville. Both speakers made reference to Mrs Park’s long and enthusiastic service in the interests of the schools under the board’s control. Mrs Park gratefully acknowledged the gift, and expressed her continued interest in the welfare of the schools.

Misses M. Read and M. Bennett were hostesses at a small party on Monday night when many friends gathered to congratulate Mr and Mrs R. M. Read on their twentieth wedding anniversary. A pleasant time was spent in games, competitions and dancing. After supper the anniversary cake was cut and a toast was proposed by Mr M. Delaney. Mr R. M. Read suitably replied, and shortly afterwards “Auld Lang Syne" brought a happy evening to a close. Those present were: Mr and Mrs Faid, Mrs Mann, Mr and Mrs Gibb, Mr and Mrs Delaney, Mr and Mrs Eckhoff, Mrs Fleming. Misses M. Mann, T. Brown. K. Little, D. Marshall, M. Bennett, M Read, J Young, E. Mr and Mrs W. R. Williams, of Newborough, Oamaru, tendered the young friends of their son and daughter a party at “Linga Longa," Kakanui, on Saturday last. Gaily decorated in pink and green, “ Linga Longa ” presented an attractive scene From the arrival of the first guests at 7 o’clock, a varied programme of dances and amusing games was entered intc with enthusiasm. The June meeting of the Musselburgh branch of the League of Mothers was hold on Tuesday evening, Mrs R. Abernethy presiding. The speaker for he evening was Dr Elizabeth Gregory, who look as her subject “ Pood Values.” The value of milk for inclusion in the daily diet was recognised internationally especially for growing children, one pint and a-half to one pint and three-quarters being the perfect allowance for each child per day The other constituents with their accompanying value as foods, which go to make up the perfect diet for children and adults, were then enumerated At the conclusion of the lecture many questions were asked. A vote A thanks was passed by Mrs J. Lindsay and seconded by Mr r Denton Leech During the evening a vocal solo was given by Mrs G. Tyrell, and a collection of useful articles brought by members for distribution by the District Nursing Association was later conveyed to the headquarters.

Mr and Mrs Downes Roberts have left to spend a few weeks’ holiday in Honolulu, and will return some time in August. * *

Mrs J. G. Dykes will leave with her husband on Thursday next for Wellington to sail by the Maunganui on a month's visit to Australia. Her return will be made via Auckland, where she will spend some weeks before returning home.

The Craigleith branch of the Home Economics Association held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, at the home of Mrs Reilly. The speaker for the evening was Miss O. Mercer, who gave an inspiring talk on “ Constructive Thought.” This was listened to with attention, and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

Mrs Douglas Smart, who is leaving shortly to reside in Hokitika, was the guest of honour at a bridge afternoon given by Miss Nancie Hamer on Tuesday. Those present werfc Mesdames G. Moody, J. A successful bridge and 500 evening was given by Mrs W. J. Coughlan and Mrs Van Paine at the Rialto Tea Rooms on Thursday. Those present were Mesdames A. Blaney, P. Lemon, Connelly, Clarke, Cahill. Baker, J. Richardson, T. Carroll, M. Richardson, L. Woods, F. D. Knowles. De Lautour, Christie, R. Baughan, C. T. Stewart, Irvine, Cartwright, Hungerford, F. Cheyne, Michie, W. J. Coughlan, Van Paine. Henaghan. W. Jones, Simpson, Kay, F. Kerr, G. Bowron, Langley. Francis. Ogden, A J. Dowling, and Treahy, Misses Langley, Wyber, Clark, Tyler, Daniel. Toomey, Rodgers, Parrott, Hission, F. Thomas. Aikenhead, Ryall, Kavanah, Harnett, Munro, C. M’Kenzie, M. Hungerford, and Jacobs, Messrs W. J. Coughlan. Van Paine, Cheyne. Beaumont, Collins, Cartwright, Prince, Miller, M’Ewan. and C. T. Stewart, and the Rev. Monsignor Morkane. During supper Mrs Coughlan thanked Mr P. Hackett for the generous donation of his rooms and supper for the Charity Ball Supper Funds.

The monthly meeting of the Musical and Play-reading Circles of St. Philomena’s College Ex-pupils’ Association was held in the college on Monday evening, the president (Mrs P. Walsh) presiding. After a short programme contributed by Miss M. O’Connell (songs), Miss L. Towne (violin solos), and Miss M. Baker (elocution), a debate was held, the subject being “Is the increase in wages of any material advantage? ” Miss E. Meikle and Mrs R. G. Sutherland took the affirmative and Misses E. Houston and D. M’Dowall the negative side, and an interesting and spirited debate ensued. Miss E. Tither and Mrs A. J. Dowling had a difficult task in adjudicating, and, after much deliberation, awarded the decision to the negative side, with Miss E. the best speaker. The debate was thfen thrown open for discussion. and a number of members expressed their views both for and against. The members enjoyed the debate so much that the hope was expressed that many more would appear on the programmes in future.
