NEW KARITANE HOSPITAL

SUBSCRIPTION LIST OPEN That the people of Otago are justly proud of the work of the Plunket Society, the birthplace of which is in this city, is well exemplified by the generous response to the rebuilding fund. The subscription list is now at the Otago Daily Times office. At the moment just on £7OOO has been subscribed, and promises for additional substantial amounts have been received. The president, Mrs Joseph M’Georgc, has stressed the point that no donation will be considered too small. Those of moderate means are reminded that subscriptions of £1 Is and even less will be very welcome. That a new building is necessary at Anderson’s Bay, if this splendid work is to be maintained, goes without argument. That the infantile death rate of this country was 8.9 per cent, when the society was founded, and that today that rate is only 3.2 per cent—the lowest infantile death rate in the world —is a glowing tribute to the society s achievement.

The present appeal is being made to secure the sum of £20,000, which will enable a type of hospital to be constructed in keeping with the great work the society is doing and yet comply with the ideas of the founders of the movement and the attitude of the present management—simple instructions in mothercraft and child welfare along lines readily, adaptable to the present-day wage earner’s household.
