WOMEN’S DIVISION N.Z. FARMERS’ UNION

Reports of meetings ol branches are requested, but they should be furnished promptly, for the publication of reports that are not supplied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot , be promised. The Cromwell branch of the W.D.F.U. met in the Anglican Hall on Thursday, Mrs Morrow presiding. Mrs Renwick gave a talk on “The Work of Farmers’ Wives in Canada.” A competition for the best chrysanthemum bloom was won by Mrs Yeoman. On account of Mrs Morrow being about to leave the district she forwarded her resignation as president, her place being filled by Mrs J. Ritchie. Mrs W. Brown was appointed vice-presi-dent in place of Mrs J. Ritchie. A successful “ bring and buy ” sale was held during the month.

The Palmerston branch met in the supper room on Friday, Mrs D. Ross presiding. It was decided to give a donation of £2 2s to the King George V Memorial Fund. The provincial president, Mrs Elliott, gave an address on “The Women’s Division of New Zealand.” Members from the Farmers’ Union meeting arrived later and were entertained at supper. The hostesses were Mesdames M’Rac, Craig, Clark, and the junior members. * * * On Wednesday night the Weston branch celebrated its fifth birthday by means of a social and dance. The programme was contributed by Misses A. Weaver, M. Mitchell, T. Laney, and M. Malheson (duels). Miss E. Mitchell (song in character), a play, “What Happened to ’Encry,” with the following players:—Misses B. Falloon, A. Weaver, M. Mitchell, and E. Mitchell; a Victorian dance by Mesdames Third, Gemmell, Craig, and Campbell, and Misses K. Matheson, I. Laney, B. Falloon, and E. Mitchell; and a Coronation tableau by Misses K. Matheson, A. Weaver, M. Malheson, B. Falloon. T. Yeoman, M Devon, M Mitchell, and 1. Laney. The accomapniments were played by Mesdames Miller and Cairns, and Miss K. Malheson. The five candles on "the birthday cake were lit by Mrs Frew and extinguished by Mrs Ivan Mitchell, and the cake was cut by the president <Mrs Burclclt). Mrs Durwood (vicepresident of the North Otago executive) spoke on the aims and objects of the division, and an enjoyable dance followed, with Mr G. C. Craig as M C. v Y- •/• The Alexandra brand met in the Anglican Hall on Friday. Mrs Timmings. sen., presided. Mr Nottagc gave an address on “ Rarotonga Island,” and

dealt with fruit and vegetable growing, also the habits and customs of the natives. A competition was then held, Mrs Aimers proving the winner. Group I were hostesses. v V The annual social of the Clandeboye branch was held in the public hall, Miss E. Livesey presiding. During the evening games and competitions for both old and young, supervised by Miss Livesey, were indulged in, interspersed with items of entertainment by Miss Kay and Mr Mayne (Timr.ru). Miss E. Bryan (Temuka) contributed vocal solos. The birthday cake was cut by Mrs B. E. Evans (Timaru). The five candles were lit by Mrs Watson (Geraldine) and extinguished by Mrs J. C. Bisdee (ex-president of the Temuka branch). On behalf of the Temuka branch, Mrs W. H. Davey (president) gave some sound advice on union matters generally. V V V Mrs D. Malcolm (vice-president) presided at the May meeting of the Enfield braheh. Mesdames D. Manson, Rowlands, and W. Malcolm were added to the committee. The roll call was, “ Uses of a Lemon.” The junior branch joined in for the social half-hour, which was conducted by Mrs D. Manson and Miss Atkinson. The hostesses were Mesdames Anderson and Corrick. The competitions resulted as follows; Senior: Best bloom, Mrs A. Manson 1; three-minute sponge, Mrs D. Malcolm 1. Junior: Three pikelets, Miss M. Helliwell X; darning, Miss R. Anderson 1. * * * Mrs W. Kirkpatrick presided at the meeting of the Airedale-Rosebery branch. Mrs Stevenson (Weston) gave a demonstration on “Curing Skins,” and exhibited skins to show the effectiveness of the methods demonstrated. The competitions resulted as

follows:—Flowers—Mrs J. Poison 1, Mrs W. Kirkpatrick 2, Mrs Roberts 3; baking—Miss I. Hastings 1, Mrs Poison 2; fancy work, Mrs E. Roberts 1; junior fancy work, Miss J. Kirkpatrick 1, Miss M. Buick 2. Miss Buick was in charge of the social half-hour, at which a grocery competition was won by Miss I. Hastings, with Mrs J. Poison second. •y. v .y. The monthly meeting of the Maheno-Incholme-Kauru branch was held on Wednesday, Mrs Currie presiding over a good attendance of members. Circulars received from the North Otago Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals were distributed among the members. An interesting talk on the North Otago Farmers’ Union trip to Nelson was given by Mrs Marshall. The competition for chrysanthemums was won by Mrs Kelcher, with Mrs G. Lawrence second and Miss J. Robertson third. •v- -Y- Y Mrs M. Hamilton presided at the May meeting of the Lauder-Becks branch in the Lauder Hall. A lecture and demonstration on “Table Service ” were given by Miss Buddie, of the A.C.E. The competition for “the best plate of biscuits” resulted as follows:—Mrs Armstrong 1, Mrs J. Lcask 2, and Mrs A. Brown 3. Hostesses were Mesdamcs Hoskin and Wragge.
