HEALTH CAMP FUND
STATEMENT BY PROPAGANDA COMMITTEE FURTHER APPEAL MADE The members of the King George V Memorial Fund Propaganda Committee in Otago—the Mayor and Messrs M. Myers, Newman, and Ft Wilsonhave issued the following statement regarding the objective and the present state of the fund both here and in the northern centres:— "We call the attention of the people of Otago to the fact that every £1 contributed at this stage of the appeal carries with it a Government subsidy of £1 so that a gift is immediately increased by a similar amount. The long and splendid reign of King George V merits a fitting memorial to commemorate not only his personal qualities but to perpetuate the glories of his reign To make some suitable recognition of these matters, the King George V Memorial Fund has been established throughout the Empire, so that in ou; effort we are but taking our part in a great Empire-wide movement to commemorate his memory. " In each area—that is, country. State or Dominion—the memorial is to be self-contained, and is to take a form suitable to the genius and needs of that territory and its people. In Great Britain it will take the form of the acquisition of playing fields for the youth of the country. In New Zealand, with the approval of King George VI, the memorial will consist of permanent health camps for children (two in each island), and it is desired that the sum of at least £ 100,000 should be available for this purpose. As the Government from the national exchequer is providing £50,000, this leaves the remainder to be raised by individual contributions and local effort. " The funds will be controlled by the Advisory Board of the Health Camps, with two delegates from each of the four central areas and the Directorgeneral of Health, the Director-gene-ral of Post and Telegraphs, and the Director of Education. This board will ensure the proper utilisation of the funds, and the proper nursing and education of the children when in camp. "We hope to raise £SOOO in Dunedin. of which sum we now have £4125. Auckland has raised £16,600, Wellington £BI2O, and Christchurch £5440."
