HOW DO YOU WALK?
"I fell in love with her because of the way she walked," said Kipling of the lady who became his wife. Kipling was one of the keenest practical observers of human nature, and knew that the manner in which people walked is a sure guide to their character and tendencies. The way a person "carries herself" is the outside picture of her innermost thoughts taking form in action; and it is an amusing study to try to read the characters of your friends from the way they walk. Here (writes John Church, in the Daily Mail) are a few pointers which will help you to do so:— Those who walk with shoulders upright, placing their feet down firmly, posssess self-control and determination. If the steps are long, the owners are generally long-headed, friendly, and agreeable. If the steps are slow, they are non-progressive.
A short, quick step indicates a brisk and active, but rather contracted, mind. *. * * Mincing walkers are affected and artificial. They accomplish little. * * * ■The heavy, over-ponderous, overdignified walker is a good judge of food. He is also opposed to improvement or reform, and always looks after "Number One." * * * Cunning, shrewd, secretive, " foxy " persons walk with a light step in a crouching, watchful and wary attitude. Beware of them—they do not make good friends. * * * Careless walkers are naturally just what they appear to be. Those who roll from side to side lack directness of character and are inclined to sidestep responsibility.
A stooping posture tells of lack of self-confidence but kindliness and thought for others. This type is often very intelligent but usually unappreciated. Those who walk heavily on their heels havp a "don't care" spirit. Walking with splay feet denotes a sense of humour but lack of caution. In most cases, too. such walkers are egotistical. * # * When the toes incline inwards, genius, secretivencss and modesty are denoted. * * * Those who carry themselves in a quiet, dignified way suggest reserve force and power well in hand. They have self-confidence and control, and do not usually waste energy in move-
ment or gesture. They also have personal magnetism. * & >i< How do you walk? And what is the characteristic gait of your friends and acquaintances? You will find that the pointers given here are curiously true when it comes to diagnosing a person's character. And remember that it is a distinct asset to be able to sum up the character of an individual at first glance. Make a study of this game and one day it may prove very helpful to you.
