HORTICULTURAL SCIENCE
COURSE ARRANGED IN DUNEDIN Some years ago an educational scheme in horticulture was woriued out by the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, but, as it was felt that one having the sanction of the State was desirable, the Government passed the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture Act, 1927, which authorised the institute to conduct examinations and to issue to successful candidates appropriate certificates and diplomas. Regulations under this Act were passed in 1928. This educational scheme has been in operation ever since, and the institute has secured the provision of a number of classes in various centres for the preparation of students in the subjects constituting the educational course of the institute, and a considerable number of students have already been examined and awarded certiflWhile most of the Institute's work has been in the direction of education, its activities have not been confined to this alone. Forest conservation, protection to discoverers of new varieties of plants of their own .growing, nomenclature, provision of a New Zealand horticultural judges' register, rules for judging at horticultural shows, bud selection and survey, and national botanic gardens—these are some of the directions in which the institute is endeavouring to assist the cause of horticulture in the Dominion. To facilitate education, and so assist the many Dunedin students in their studies of the theoretical side of gardening, lectures in horticultural science, sponsored by the institute, have been arranged at the King Edward Technical College, and it is hoped that many students will avail themselves of this valuable course.
