RUGBY FOOTBALL
THE SPRINGBOKS' TOUR A UNIVERSITY REQUEST It was briefly reported yesterday morning that a request to the executive of the New Zealand. Rugby Union that a match should be arranged between a University team and the Springboks had been received without comment. The matter came before the executive in the form of a letter from the Under-secretary of Internal Affairs, Mr J. W. Heenan, who advised that the following telegram had been received by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr W. E. Parry) from Mr Wall, secretary of the Otago University. Football Club, Dunedin:— "A meeting Of footballers representing New Zealand University colleges instructs me to convey to you a motion, proposed by Mr H. G. Munro, and seconded by Professor Andrew, which was carried unanimously, asking your influence with the New Zealand Rugby Union with a view to arranging a fixture for a New Zealand University team against the Springboks." To this the Minister had replied stating that the tour of the Springboks had been arranged entirely between the New Zealand and South African Rugby Unions, and it did not seem to him that a State department could very well intercede in the way suggested. The Dunedin message had been passed on to the -New Zealand Rugby Union for consideration. REMAINING IN INVERCARGILL MITCHELL ACCEPTS TEMPORARY POSITION ' The appearance in Dunedin football of N. A. Mitchell, the Southland and All Black three-quarter, will be delayed for some time longer than was at first expected. On inquiry from Invercargill last night, it was ascertained that Mitchell has accepted a temporary appointment there, and that he will not come to Dunedin for at least two months.
