NEW OBSERVATORY
THE CARTER BEQUEST PROBABLE ERECTION IN WELLINGTON (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 27. After lengthy negotiations between the Government and interested parties, finality is apparently likely to be realised in the matter of the Carter Bequest, and Wellington will be the site of a new astronomical observatory. This was one of the chief items before the annual meeting of the council of the Royal Society of New Zealand to-day. The proposal provides for the absorption of about half the £12,000 now available in buildings and equipment, to meet which the City Council will provide a site and a nine-inch telescope, while the Government and the city together will be responsible for the maintenance of the observatory. The balance of the fund will be held available for further development.
Discussion of the recommendation was taken in committee.
