BAND CONTEST
FIRST A GRADE TEST WON BY WOOLSTON (Per United Press Association) NELSON. Feb. 17. “As each session goes you bands improve,” said the judge (Mr Kerry), after hearing seven bands in the first A Grade Test Selection to-night. “ When I heard the Hymn section I was beginning lo wish I had never come to Now Zealand, but there has been good playing to-night.” His big criticism was the thin cornet playing, which he could not tolerate. Many cornet players gave the impression that they had just begun the cornet a fortnight before the contest. He had been particularly impressed by the two trombone players and one soprano cornet. The placings were as follows: Woolston 1 Wanganui Garrison .. .. 2 Timaru Municipal .. .. 3 St. Kilda Municipal .. .. 4 Queen Alexandra’s Own .. 5 Palmerston North Garrison 0 Nelson Garrison 7 MARCHING COMPETITION FIRST PLACE TO WOOLSTON (Per United Press Association) NELSON, Feb. 17. FURTHER SOLO RESULTS (Per United Press Association) NELSON, Feb. 17. Two large solo classes were judged in the morning. Mr Kerry said he could claim to know the set euphonium piece, as he was a pupil of the composer, and had played it twice a week for six years. He criticised the playing of the cadenza, and said something was lacking in the introduction and the theme, which required warmth of tone and colour. Results: — V.
