LADIES’ BOWLING

ANNUAL TOURNAMENT MRS STEWART WINS SINGLES At the Logan Park green yesterday the Singles competition of the Otago Ladies’ Bowling Association’s tournament was concluded, the winner being Mrs Stewart, of the Dunedin Club. The strong wind which has been prevalent for the past few days had an unsettling effect on the players, and the element of chance entered largely into the play. A bowl going straight to its objective would occasionally be diverted from its course, and, conversely, the latter often proved to be the case. 'Notwithstanding this, some good exhibitions of bowling were give. It was found necessary, as a result of ties in yesterday’s section play, to play off in two sections to decide each section winner. These games resulted as follows: Miss Gray 13, Mrs Williams 1. Mrs Sutherland, a bye. Miss Gray 10, Mrs Sutherland 7. Section winner: Miss Gray. Mrs Stewart 17, Mrs Paterson 16. Section winner: Mrs Stewart. A start was then made with the competition, in which the results were:— FIRST ROUND Mrs M’Connell 15, Mrs Lee 14. Mrs Stewart 23, Mrs Anderson 9. Mrs Gregory 22, Mrs Knowles 16. Mrs Stubbs 25, Miss Gray 13. SECOND ROUND Mrs Stewart 22, Mrs M’Connell 10. Mrs Stubbs 20, Mrs Gregory 4. Mrs Faulks 17, Mrs Grieve 14. Mrs Seymour 24, Mrs Gardiner 9. SEMI-FINALS Mrs Stewart 20, Mrs Stubbs 16. Mrs Seymour 20. Mrs Faulks 9. Both of these games were evenly contested, and in each instance the result might easily have been reversed. Mrs

Paulks was expected to provide stem opposition to Mrs Seymour, and the result was in doubt right to the final head, where ,she required three to tie and four to win. Her last bowl, however, gave Mrs Seymour the shot and the game. FINAL Mrs Stewart (Dunedin) 18, Mrs Seymour (Caversham) 9. Mrs Stewart has previously been successful in the Singles tournament, and was a favourite for the title. When half the heads had been completed, Mrs Stewart was leading by eight points to six, Mrs Seymour was unfortunate, however, for on two occasions when lying shot, she presented Mrs Stewart with what for all practical purposes might be counted as two points. From the eleventh. head Mrs Stewart steadily drew away, and allowed Mrs Seymour only three points, while she gained nine. The game was concluded on the nineteenth bead with the scores 18 to 9 in Mrs Stewart’s favour. The winner is to be congratulated on her steady play right throughout the Singles tournament under playing conditions which were all against good bowling.
