QUEENSTOWN The Weather During the week almost an Inch of rain has fallen in the district, which is an unprecedented fall for any period in the month of February. A considerable amount of snow has also fallen on the higher levels, and for several days we have had a decidedly wintry turn, which has never been known for this time of the year. Girl Guides The local Girl Guides held a company tea in the Parish Hall recently. At a social held subsequently the president, Mrs Irwin Hunter, presented second-class badges to the following:— Misses Doreen Buckham, Margaret Miles, Kathleen Lee. Betty Clayton, Mona Inglis, Betty Hales. Mrs Hunter, who is an indefatigable worker in the Girl Guide movement, gave a cheque for £l2 7s to the company from the proceeds of Christmas novelties made by her. Mrs W. H. Overton thanked Mrs Hunter for her unfailing interest. Railway Excursion Queenstown is an ever-popular spot for people living in the centres. On Sunday, over 500 people landed here per the s.s. Earnslaw, and spent the afternoon in the town. The Southland Regimental Band accompanied the trippers and gave a programme in the park rotunda to an appreciative audience of visitors and local residents. On Sunday next the Sunshine Club, Dunedin, has chosen Queenstown for its annual outing. Bowling Interest In the game of bowls is still well maintained on the local greens. The play is confined mostly to visitors. During the week several new faces have been seen on the green. Amongst these are Mr Bert Barlow (Georgetown Club, Invercargill), Mr and Mrs Robert Buchanan (Linwood Club, Christchurch), Messrs Frank Lambeth, H. Smeaton, Andrew Campbell, W. M. Finlayson, all members of Dunedin clubs, Mr James Thomson (Otautau), Mr William Bell (Invercargill), Mr W. Scobie (Gore), Mr P. A. Seeligson (Mount Lawley Bowling Club, Perth, W.A.). The greens are in splendid order as the result of ample moisture, and visitors are loud in their praise of the excellent sport they are deriving as well as the beauty of the surroundings. Masonic The annual installation of worshipful master and investitute of officers of Lake Lodge of Ophir (Queenstown) and Arrow Kilwinning (Arrowtown) took place on Monday and Tuesday. In the absence of Rt. Wor. Bro. G. J. Yule, and Prov. G.M. of Southland, who is in Australia, the installations v/ere carried out by Rt. Wor. Bro. T. M. Rankin, P. Dep. G.M., of Invercargill, assisted by Rt. Wor. Bro. F. Steans. Wor, Bro. H. E. Mackenzie, of Invercargill, was the assist. G.D.C. Mathias, of Waipiata, are among visitors to Queenstown. . . , ... Mrs H. J. Lewis and her daughter Ngaire, of Long Gully, have gone to the Bluff on holiday. Mr P. C. Webb, Minister of Mines, arrived in Queenstown on Tuesday evening from the south. He will remain here over to-morrow. Misses Erin Terry and Dorothy English, of Invercargill, are spending a short holiday here. They are the guests of Mr and Miss Gavin. Mr H. Smeaton, of Dunedin, is revisiting Queenstown. Mr and Mrs S. Lawn, of Dunedin, are taking part of their holidays in Queenstown. ~ . _ . Mr and Miss Knuckley, of Wanganui, were the guests of Mr and Mrs Thomas Stroud over the week-end. Mr and Mrs George Turner, of Caversham, who recently celebrated their golden wedding, came to Queenstown fast week for a short holiday. They are the guests of Mrs Turner’s brother and sister-in-law, Mr and Mrs S. S. A Lord Balfour of Burleigh, chairman of directors of the National Bank of New Zealand in London, and Mr L, Wvber, of Wellington, inspector of the same bank, arrived in Queenstown yesterday, and went on to Walter Peak. They will spend a few days Ashing in the lake in company with Major MacKenzie, and Mr F. Duncan, of Dunedin. . ~ . Mr Abbey Jones, managing-director of the Southland News, Invercargill, was a passenger by the afternoon bus on Saturday. „ . _ . Mr and Miss.F. A. Seeligson of Perth, Western Australia, included Queenstown in their tour of New Zealand. They were here last week, and both were very enthusiastic regarding the local attractions. Mr Andrew Campbell and his sister, Miss Campbell, of Dunedin, are paying their annual visit to Queenstown. Mr and Mrs W. M. Fmlayson, of Dunedin, are amongst visitors to Queenstown.
