NOTES ON THE RACING (Special to Daily Times) HAWERA, Feb. 6. Royal Routine improved to win the hurdles, but was allowed to make all his own pace. Miles out in front, and by making a fast-run race only over the concluding stages, he outpaced the first day’s winner, Don Erma. Flying Chief won the Awakino Hack Handicap very comfortably, being too good for his opponents. He is a usefullooking three-year-old by Chief Ruler ii J. Fryer’s stable. Corowa paid double figures to win the Mokau Hack Handicap, which provided one of the best finishes on the course, the whole lot being possibilities in the straight. Corowa was a bit lucky to beat Le Grand, who was on the rails and could not get through in time. International, tailed off early, also came home well, and both would have beaten the winner on a more roomy track. Student Prince improved a little, but not quite enough. He will probably do better at Egmont next week.

Oratory fell from grace with a thud when she was beaten by the hack Cheval de Volee in the Taranaki Stakes. On the day it was a fair defeat, but the mare is nowhere near her right form, giving in to the winner’s challenge almost without a struggle. The owner of Cheval de Volee only started his horse to make a-three-horse field.

Chief Ranger improved over the shorter distance in the Paul Memorial Handicap to win handily from the first day’s runner-up, Taitoru. with another improver in Onewhetu third. The unlucky runner was Hazoor, who received a sharp check at the five furlongs. He will be better suited by the Egmont track next week. Orate won the Paritutu Juvenile Handicap very easily all the way, nothing being good enough to give him a race.

Friesland, slow away in the Urenm Handicap, drew up in the first three furlongs, and, waiting for his , run, overwhelmed the leader, Supreme Court, to win going away. Grateful was favourite, and failed after having every chance. Sansfoy repeated his first day’s win in the concluding event, but he was fortunate to secure a run through the leaders entering the straight instead of having to go on the outer. It made all the difference at the finish, as he just headed off Export and Rustem.
