HIGH TENSION CABLE PIERCED

A member of the Wellington City Corporation Electricity Department cables branch had a fortunate escape last week. He and other members of a gang were working upon an underground high-tension cable conduit, breaking out a .section of concrete, when his gad slipped and pierced an 11,000-volt cable covering. There was an explosion and a burst of flame, which burned his face, hands, and arms, but he did not suffer electric shock. -He was taken to the hospital, but his condition was later reported to be not serious It is frequently necessary for men to work about live cables, which are heavily insulated, for maintenance work is going on all day and every day in one part of the city or another, and it is not always possible to shut off power from the full group of cables in the conduit.
