TRAFFIC NOISE

10 THE EDITOR Sir,—Please allow me to endorse the plea by "Central Otago Patient" in your issue of February 2. I think it is about time that those in charge took up the matter and did something for the benefit of the patients in hospital. At night time the noise which motor cycles make as they go past the hospital is most irritating. The drivers seem to take a delight in speeding along the road and in hearing the " cough "of their engines. Believe me, if they were in one of the wards and were just dropping off to sleep and one of their number roared past they would think quite a lot, even if they did not say much, and their thoughts would 'not be very complimentary to the cyclists. Or perhaps if they were to spend a week or so in hospital really ill they would have more sympathy for the patients who are here now. My opinion is that King and Cumberland streets should be closed for motor traffic from the corners of Frederick and Hanover streets at 9 o'clock at night until, rsay, 6 o'clock next morning, then we would get some sleep. It is not possible to get sleep during the day, when there is so much traffic in the thoroughfares. If my system were adopted it would merelv have the effect that the motorist would have to travel about 100 yards further to branch up to George street and back down Frederick street into King street. As there are only four hpuses in King street between the two streets mentioned, that street would not be affected. In Cumberland street there are not many more houses than there are in King street. I do not suggest that residents in either street who have cars should be excluded from entering their part of the street.—l am, etc. Indisposed.
