A remaifKable escape was experienced by 4wo residents of Palmerston Nortifci shortly after noon today when the Wellington-New Plymouth express struck the car in which they were driving at the Monrad stneet railway crossing. The car was aj'most over the crossing when it wits struck by the engine, which trav< Is at a fast speed in this locality. The drivqr of the car, Basil Leige Corry, of :212 Princes street, received only slight injuries, and was able to pnC'ceed to his home, but Jack Davis„ aged 15, of Waldegrave street, a passenger in the car, was not so fortunate. He was conveyed to hospital, and it was found that he had suicered abrasions to the face and lejgs, and shock.

The car ti trned off the main road into a holloiv by the crossing almost out of sight of the train, and appeared aljouj.; to stop. It came slowly up over the line, however, and was struck on tlie rear wheel. It was swept into a drain on the other side of the cross ing and came to rest With its noj.e against a .telegraph pole, both occupantts being flung out, one near the car and the other close to the c attle stop.
