Pi'ofessor James Shelley, director of broadcasting, returned to Christchurch by the express yesterday morning. Mr J. R. Smith, chief engineer of the National Broadcasting Service, returned to Wellington by the express yesterday morning. , Canon Percival James, of Wellington, returned north yesterday morning by the express. He will join the Port Townville at Wellington for London. Mr J. Cook, inspector of the permanent way in the Railways Department at Dunedin, who has x'etired on superannuation, was met by a large number of his fellow-employees on Wednesday evening and presented with a smoker’s outfit and a gold, watch chain. The presentation was made by the district railways engineer (Mr H. Morey), who referred to Mr Cook’s outstanding qualities, both as a railway officer and as a man, and on behalf of the staff wished him many years of happiness in his retirement. Mr Cook joined the department in 1900, and during his career was stationed at Hokitika, Stillwater, Addington. Westport,- Rangiora, Lumsden, Gore, Springfield, and Dunedin. He has held the position of inspector of the permanent way for five years.
