FREEZING COMPANIES

SALE OF MEAT TO PUBLIC CONFERENCE WITH MASTER BUTCHERS i (Peb United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 4. Proposals are at present being considered by the Master Butchers’ Associations throughout New Zealand, whereby meat from freezing works will no longer be sold direct to the public or to institutions. The proposals are the result of a confer ence called at the direction of the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Lee Martin) when complaints were made to him of the competition retail butchers were suffering from freezing works. The conference was held in Wellington some time ago and certain proposals were submitted by freezing companies, which are now being considered by the butchers. The Minister said this evening that a further meeting was to be held on February 1.4, and if no counter-proposals were submitted by the butchers the matter would be completed. It is understood that the freezing companies’ proposal was that if they were no longer to retail meat, which through superficial damage in slaughtering could not be passed for export, the butchers should sign an agreement to take from the companies the whole of their output of such meat. It is further understood that the Government # has undertaken to fix the price paid to the companies and the retail price to the public.
