OBITUARY

MR D. V. GAIN The death of Mr David Victor Gain, which occurred this week, removed a well-known figure from the commercial community of Dunedin. Mr Gain, who was born in this city in 1884, was educated at the Arthur Street School, and commenced his commercial career as a traveller for Messrs Ahlfeld Brothers, merchants. About 20 years ago he entered the service of Hudsons, Ltd., now Cadbury Fry Hudson, Ltd., and represented that firm on the road between Oamaru and Invercargill until shortly before his death. MiGain took a prominent part in the affairs of the Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen’s Association, of which he was a past president. In his younger days he was a keen cricketer, and of late years he was a member of the Tainui Bowling Club. He is survived by his wife and two sons and a daughter.

MR JOHN WARD

(Per United Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Feb. 4. The death is announced of Mr John Ward, proprietor of the weekly paper, Southern Cross. He was 81 years of age. In his younger days Mr Ward was sub-editor of the Southland News, and also of the Southland Times. He was a prominent Oddfellow and held many .offices.
