DOCKYARD DISMISSALS

QUESTION IN PARLIAMENT CONFISCATION OF LEAFLETS LONDON, Feb. 3. Mr W. Gallacher (Com.), in the House of Commons, asked on whose instructions plain-clothes police were called to Portsmouth dockyard on January 27 to confiscate leaflets relating to the recent dismissals at Sheerness and Devonport which were being distributed there. Sir Samuel Hoare replied that the naval authorities were informed of the intention to distribute the leaflets, dissemination of which would be contrary to the regulations, and drew the attention of the Portsmouth city police, who were responsible for the action. A previous message stated: A member of the House of Commons, Mr John Jagger, has given notice to the House that he will ask a question about the dismissal of a man named H. S. R. Easthope from the Army Signal Corps at Devonport after over 12 years’ service without reason and later from Devonport Dockyard after one week’s service.
