Thursday, February 4. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) A SERIOUS CHARGE Ethel May Fox, for whom Mr O. J. Cooke appeared, was charged on remand with having used an instrument on a woman for an unlawful purpose —On the application of Chief Detective Young a further remand until Wednesday next was granted. THEFT OF RING A girl aged 19 years, suppression of whose name was ordered, pleaded guilty to having stolen a ring valued at £7.—Chief Detective Young stated that on August 5 of last year the accused. whilst visiting her aunt in Invercargill, stole a ring which had been left on a dressing table. ,The police were notified, and, as a result of investigations, the theft was traced to the accused, who at first denied the offence, but later admitted it. The girl had been at a loose end, and the present proceedings were taken more with a view to having her placed under some suoervision than having her punished. —Mr O, G. Stevens, who appeared for the accused, said that the latter had not been leading a loose life, but had been unfortunate, and had taken the ring to get some money.—The magistrate said that in the circumstances and considering the girl’s age. he would be Justified in not entering a conviction, The matter would be adjourned for 12 months conditional on her remaining under the supervision of the female probation officer, and being of good behaviour during that period. FISHING WITHOUT LICENCE John MTvor pleaded guilty to having fished for trout without a licence.—For the Acclimatisation Society, Mr P. S. Anderson said that on Sunday last the ranger had found the defendant fishing
