TROTTING NOTES

By Sentinel A Novel Idea A ladies’ saddle trot will be included in the card for the Brisbane Trotting Club’s meeting on February 15. Thanhs A copy of the Wellington Trotting Club’s racebook is to hand and acknowwith thanks. The Wellington Gold Cup The Wellington Gold Cup was established in 1916, when the imported horse Great Audubon won in 4mm 55 2-ssec. The trotter Whispering Willie won the. following year in 4min 39sec. Blue Mountain Blue Mountain was sore after racing at the Forbury Park meeting, and in consequence dropped out on the first day of the Wellington meeting. Aidle-de-Camp

Aide-de-Camp, who won at Wellington, was bred by his owner, Mr J. R. Frizzell, and got by Native King— Winnie Logan, by Logan Pointer—Dalwhinnie, by Lieutenant J, a son of George M. Patchen. Black Marble

Black Marble, the winner of the Gracefield Trial Handicap, is a five-vear-old mare by Nelson Derby from Grattan Derby, by Huia Dillon—Muriel Derby, by Mauritius—Lottie Derby. Grattan Derby is also the dam of Homeward. Franz Derby

Franz Derby, the winner of the Preliminary Handicap at Wellington,, hails from Palmerston North. She is an aged mare by Nelson Derby from La Franz, by Franz (brother to Fritz) from A 1 F.. an imported mare by Charleston. The Gold Cup The time record for the Wellington Gold Cup is held by Roi I’Or, who registered 4min 21sec in 1933. Other good performances include those of Harold Logan. , 4min 24sec, in 1931; Jewel Pointer, 4min 24sec, in 1934; Royal Silk. 4min 24 4-ssec, in 1932; and Silver de Oro, 4min 25sec, in 1935. Last year the race was won by Sure on a heavy track in 4min 37sec. Conference in Adelaide During the championship carnival in Adelaide, delegates from all the States will meet in conference. It is thought that one of the principal matters discussed will be the handicapping system,

which is not giving a great deal of satisfaction in South Australia. Especially is this so where it concerns horses winning small stakes in the country districts.

Opinions Discounted The opinions expressed by three New Zealand visitors to Adelaide that Lawn Derby would beat Indianapolis on the three furlongs track at Wayville, and that both pacers would go close to two minutes for a mile in New Zealand have not been taken seriously (says the Press), for all interested in the sport in New Zealand know that neither Messrs J. R. M’Kenzie, D. F. Glanville, nor S. V. M’Ewan have seen Indianapolis work on a small track Lawn Derby is a great pacer, according to some Australian writers, but then, again, there have, been other wonderful pacers with fine records that have paraded at Addington and have failed to live up to the reputations that accompanied them. Walla Walla was the very best, and his record of 2min 2 2-ssec was not equalled by him in New Zealand. Auburn Lad went well against the record, but failed in most of his races, while New Derby, recognised as a speedster, has not reproduced his form in New Zealand. Indianapolis, up to the present has not been tried on a small track, but there is no evidence that he would not handle a small course better than the horses mentioned. It is not likely that the pair will ever meet, and in the meantime Indianapolis, with his record of 2min 0 2-ssec, has set a mark that Lawn Derby has yet to approach.
