CHRISTCHURCH WAR MEMORIAL

CONSTRUCTION OF BRONZE FIGURES GOOD PROGRESS REPORTED ‘From Our Own Correspondent) (By Air Mail) LONDON, Jan. 16. Good progress is being made with the casting of the bronze figures for the Christchurch war memorial which is to be placed in the Cathedral Gardens. The whole of the memorial has been designed by, and the figures modelled by, Mr William T. Ti'ethewey, of Christchurch. The figures represent Grief, Valour, Justice, Youth, Peace, and Victory, and with one exception are all nine feet high—the sixth is Victory, which is the dominating figure of the group, and which, with its wings, is 15ft high. These figures are being cast at Mr A. B. Burton’s foundry at Thames Ditton, which has a world-wide reputation, and it was interesting to hear that during a visit paid by their Majesties, the King and Queen, in December last, they saw, and were interested in, the work going forward on this memorial.

Mr Trethewey spent some time in England last summer, and expressed satisfaction with the way the work was going on. The packing of the bronze figures is now proceeding, and the whole will be shipped shortly.
