OBITUARY

MR ROBERT STUERT Mr Robert Stuert, who died in the closing days of the year, was for many years a well-known figure in the Crookston district. He was born in the north of Ireland and came to New Zealand by the Pomona in 1876, when he was .18 years of age. He worked for a time in the Taieri and other districts before going to Tapanui and Crookston. For many years he was known as an expert ditcher and a shearer in the good old days of blade shearing, and for one or two seasons at least was the wringer in the Blackstone Hill shed. Of a very kindly disposition, he had many friends who took an interest in him to the last. He was never married, and when.the infirmities of age grew on him he found a quiet retreat in Ross Home, where he was able to keep himself on his savings and to receive the comfort that his old age needed. During the seven years of his residence there he made many friends and was always very appreciative of visits from old Crookston friends. He was a faithful and regular attendant at the North-East Valley Presbyterian Church. The funeral took place at the Tapanui Cemetery in the presence of a group of old employers and friends MRS JAMES ELLIOTT Mrs James Elliott, who died on Sunday, was born at Caithness inScotland in 1853, and came to New Zealand in 1856. They later resided on their own property at Mount Ross, and finally came to Dunedin to retire in 1913.
