SANDERS CUP TRIAL

SECOND RACE TO EILEEN ONLY THREE BOATS START Only three boats started in the second trial to choose Otago's challenger for the Sanders Cup contest, and the race was robbed of some of its interest by reason of the fact that Lynette, C. J. Pettit's new craft, which won the first trial, was unable to start because of a broken mast. The race was v/on by Eileen by 35 seconds from Winifred, which, however, was disqualified for crossing the starting line before the gun. Incidentally Winifred failed to cross the starting line at the end of each round. The third boat, Betty, was one minute behind Winifred. - The course was a windward and leeward one from the Kitchener street pile to the Castle beacon, three times round. There was an excellent sailing breeze from the north-east. Winifred beat the gun by about two seconds and was closely followed by Betty, Eileen getting a bad start. On the beat up to the Castle beacon Eileen gained a slight advantage and rounded four seconds ahead of Winifred, Betty being the same distance behind. Eileen and Winifred set their spinnakers on the wrong side and lost ground making the change, but the former maintained her lead on the run before the wind and rounded the Kitchener street pile eight seconds ahead of Betty, which was well handled by her skipper, Walker. Winifred, which was about 25 seconds behind, immediately went oh a long board over to the Peninsula, and weathered the other two boats when they crossed tacks. Betty sailed well on the port tack and weathered Eileen, but she lost the advantage on the opposite board. Winifred was first round the Castle beacon the second time, Eileen following five seconds later, with Betty about lmin lOsec behind the leading boat. On the run before the wind Eileen outsailed Winifred and caught her just before the Kitchener street pile, which she rounded 10 seconds ahead of her rival. Betty again sailed well on the run, and was only half a minute behind. The last round was practically a repetition of the second. Winifred again stood over to the Peninsula, and weathered her opponents on the long board, and was round the beacon for. the last time with 10 seconds to spare. Eileen was 50 seconds ahead of Betty, and on the run again caught Winifred and beat her to the Kitchener street pile by 15 seconds. Betty set her spinnaker on the starboard side and did not fare so well as on the two previous rounds, being a full minute behind the leader as she rounded the pile. On the final beat up to the finishing line Eileen maintained her lead to cross the line 35 seconds ahead of Winifred. Betty was lmin 36sec behind Eileen. The result was as follows: — Eileen, lhr 9min 15sec .. 1 Betty, lhr lOmin 50sec 2 Winifred, lhr 9min 35sec, was disqualified. CORNWELL CUP TRIAL The second Cornwell Cup trial was held over a windward and leeward course, two boats starting— Oakie (Todd) and Kathleen (S. Kenna). . The former won by 15 seconds after a close race. A second race was; started over a shortened course, .the crews changing boats,, but a mishap to' one of the small craft'resulted in the'contest being abandoned. •;,,•..:.,
