BALCLUTHA Fire Brigades' Competition Five South Otago fire brigades competed on Saturday afternoon on the Show Ground, Balclutha, for the Watts Cup, which was last year won by Milton. This time Balclutha was successful, just beating Lawrence. The principal officials for the day were Messrs D. Stewart (Lawrence) and Nightingale (Oamaru), judges; Messrs M-Donald, Glenn, C. J. Wood and J. R. Wilson, timekeepers; Messrs J. Ledingham (Lawrence) and J. Wells (Milton), dressing judges. Mr Basil Frye (Balclutha) made an excellent press steward. The weather was fine until almost the finish, when light rain fell. Results were as follows, A teams only counting for cup points:— Five-men Competition.—Balclutha A, 32 2-ssec, 2sec penalty, total 34 2-ssec, 1; Lawrence A, 37sec, 2; Balclutha B, 35 l-ssec, 2sec penalty, total 37 l-ssec, 3. Other teams competing were: Milton A 38 l-ssec (including lsec penalty), Milton B 40 3-ssec (3sec penalty), Kaitangata 50 l-ssec (6sec penalty), Tapanui A 46 2-ssec (3sec penalty). The names of the winning Balclutha team were: H. and J. Morris, T. Gold, N. Briscoe and I. Scott. One-man Competition.—There was a large entry. The placed men were:— H. Halkett (Milton), 65sec, 1; T. Hanson (Milton), 63 2-ssec (6sec penalty, 63 3-ssec), 2; E. Morris (Balclutha), 69 3-ssec (2sec penalty, 71 3-ssec). 3. Only the first three events counted for cup points, which were:—Balclutha A 36 points, Lawrence A 34 points, Tapanui A 23 points. In the evening the visiting brigadesmen were entertained at a social and smoke concert in the Band Hall, when the cup and other trophies were presented, and an enjoyable time spent. 8 | Cricket

Milton A, at Balclutha on Saturday, Clutha won by 172 runs to 132, Of the winners' score Baxter contributed no fewer than 131, Randle (14) being the only other Clutha batsman to reach double figures Marryatt took four wickets for 56 and Heads, Collins, and Herbert one wicket each. Top score for Milton was made by R. Hood (28), H. Collins (27), F. Marryatt (15), F. Bowie (12), extras 22. Bowling for Clutha, L. Guest took five wickets for 37 runs and Nimmo four for 32.

A. and P. Society Entries Extra large entries have been received in the draught horse and crossbred sheep classes for the annual show of the Clutha and Matau A. and P. Society to be held this week. The total of entries is 873, made up of: Sheep 260, dogs 20, butter 31, baking 118, competitions 33, cattle 153, pigs 9, draught horses 137, thoroughbreds and hackneys 35, light horses' 77. MILTON Bowling Four rinks from Milton Club visited Kaitangata on Saturday afternoon for the inter-club fixture, and were defeated by the substantial margin of 42 points. Scores:—Kaitangata, 106; Milton, 64. Kaitangata also defeated two rinks from Warepa Club by 22 points. Scores: Kaitangta, 51; Warepa, 29. Lawn Tennis The South Otago A Grade lawn tennis fixtures were continued on Saturday afternoon, when a team from Milton Club visited Balclutha, and in a keen and closely-contested game defeated the home team by the narrow margin of two sets (12 games). Milton won three of the four sets in the Men's Singles, also both of the Men's Doubles, and three of the Mixed Doubles. Balclutha registered victory in the Women's Singles and Doubles. Scores: Milton, 9 sets (105 games); Balclutha, 7 sets (93 games). Cricket

A match between Milton Club's B team and Benhar was played on the Milton Domain on Saturday afternoon, and resulted in a victory for Milton by 21 runs. Batting first, Milton scored 171, towards which the veteran E. Olver topped the score with 55, closely followed by J. Densem, who signalised his first game this year by compiling 52, which included three sixers and four boundaries. The best bowling averages for Benhar were secured by A. Stewart (three for 10) and C. Barnett (four for 22). Benhar responded with 150 runs, towards which the principal contributors were G. Barron (43), B. Budge (25), and W. Barron (21). Bowling for Milton, the most successful were L. Wybrow (three wickets for nine) and T. Roberts (five for 44). KUROW Dance Recital The Kurow Hall was filled to its capacity on Friday last, the occasion being a dance recital by the pupils of Miss Jessie Jardine. The dancing was excellently arranged, and the dresses, costumes, etc., were very spectacular. WAIMATE Miss Jean Batten Miss Jean Batten paid a brief visit to Waimate on Saturday,- passing through on her way to Timaru. She was met by the Mayor (Mr George Dash), who expressed regret that Miss Batten was not able to make a longer stay in the borough. Lawn Tennis Competitions The Waihao Tennis Sub-association's competitions were continued on Saturday with B and C Grade matches. In the B Grade Morven defeated St. Patrick's by 10 sets to 6, Waimate A beat Hunter by 14 sets to 2, High School beat Waimate B by 13 sets to 3, and Willowbridge beat Glenavy by 77 games to 76, each side winning cifflit sets. In the C Grade, Hook beat St. Patrick's by 12 sets to 4, and St. Paul's beat Ikamai by 9 sets to 7. Cricket Scoring 250 for the loss of four wickets, Redcliff-Hook secured a comfortable win over Old Boys in the Waimate cricket competition. The top scorers were R. Murchison 104 and H. Johnstone, who carried his bat for 89. Old Boys scored 126 (A. Stephens 26). In the Waimate-Glenavy match E. Chapman also scored a century, being 101 not out when the innings was closed. Waimate scored 188 for five wickets (declared), and Glenavy replied with 128. Personal Constable Voyce has received notice of his transfer to Kurow. He will leave about the end of the month. Constable Wareing, of Oamaru, will fill the vacancy in the local force. Boxing Day Sports J. E. Lovelock, the famous athlete, will not be able to make an appearance at the Boxing Day sports, according to advice received from the Minister of Internal Affairs by the Caledonian Society. His tour, it was pointed out, would be concluded early in December. A. and P. Show Special Prizes Among the special awards at the Waimate A. and P.
