Replying in the debate on rearmament in the House of Lords, Earl Stanhooe said there was no question of am disarmament by Britain until they had brought themselves into line with those who had long since put rearmament in hand and had therefore made themselves relatively stronger than in former days. He was glad that the Labour Party now also saw the necessity for rearmament in this imperfect world and realised that an England which was not only strong, but which was known to be strong, was bound to exercise a great influence for Deace. THE RECRUITING SYSTEM LONDON, Nov. 19. Following Earl Stanhope’s cryptic statement in the House of Lords that the voluntary system of recruiting was in grave danger, Mr A. DuffCooper (Secretary for War), in a speech at r recruiting luncheon, said that unless there was a great improvement in the response the recruiting system would soon break down. He hoped to remedy the lack of attraction, chiefly ensuring soldiers jobs after their discharge.
