REPORTS OF COMMITTEES The Tramways Committee will report as follows at the meeting of the City Council to be held on Monday night:— TRAFFIC RETURNS The traffic returns for the tramways for the last fortnightly period, as compiled by the tramway manager, show an increase in revenue for the period, over the corresponding period of last year, of £ 349. For the period of 32 weeks from April 1 to November 7, the increase in revenue amounts to £5697, or 5.94 per cent., as compared with the corresponding period last year. The revenue and expenditure statement for the period of 28 weeks ended October 14, as compared with the corresponding period of last year, shows a surplus of £ 1005. RESERVES COMMITTEE The report of the Reserves Committee states:— . ROBIN HOOD GROUND The work of levelling and sowing down the new recreation ground at Robin Hood, which has been proceeding as a relief works measure during the past two years, has now been completed. This was a work of considerable magnitude and entailed the filling up of the banks at one end to a height of about 20 feet and a similar excavation at the other end. All the top soil was saved, and there is still a large quantity available for top-dressing when the grass is well established. The new playing area is 260 yards long by 300 yards wide, and will provide an association football ground and a hockey.ground. GENERAL COMMITTEE The General Committee will report as follows:ST. CLAIR SURF PAVILION Authority has been granted to invite applications by public advertisement for the position of female attendant at the St. Clair surf pavilion, with wages for the season for which the building is open for public use at the rate of Is 6d per hour, such wage not to exceed £2 or to be less than 25s per week. The former attendant has resigned. KAIKORAI BATHS Instructions have been given for the carrying out of necessary repainting work at the Kaikorai swimming baths, at an estimated cost of £ 13, and for sundry repairs to fencing and building, at an estimated cost of £3. SANITARY INSPECTOR. Mr D. M. Robertson has tendered his resignation from, the position of sanitary inspector, and instructions have accordingly been given for the calling of applications by public advertisement for. filling the vacancy, at the present salary of £2BO per annum. PERMIT DECLINED An application from the Spanish Relief Committee for a permit to take up a street collection on November 27 for the purpose of raising funds to send medical aid to Spain has been declined. The monthly permits for street collections have all been taken up to and including the month of December. November 27 had previously been allotted to the St. John Ambulance Association. WORKS COMMITTEE The Works Committee will submit the following report:— RATTRAY STREET WEIGHBRIDGE The committee recommends that authority be given for closing the Rattray street weighbridge, which has reached a stage where extensive repairs are necessary. Arrangements have been made with the Railways Department for its weighbridge in the goods yard close to Rattray street to be made available for the use of the public. HOURS OF WORK On October 12 last approval was given by the council to th hours of work for labourers in the City Works and the Water Departments and also scheme 5 workers being 7.45 to 11.45 a.m. and 12.15 to 4.15 p.m. each day. A petition has now been received from some 119 men, representing about 75 per cent, of the Works Department employees affected by the decision (exclusive of scheme 5 workers), requesting that the daily hours of work be changed to 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 12.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. After consideration of the matter the committee recommends that the request of the petition be agreed to, subject to the alteration being approved by the Water Department, Drainage Board and scheme 5 outside employees The proposal will not apply to quarries, asphalt plant and pumping station garage, the employees of which come under the Factories Act, nor to horse drivers and treet sweepers ROAD TO FEVER HOSPITAL Authority has been given for deviating the road on th? north-eastern side of Logan Park, including the construction of a bridge across the Opoho channel. The object of the deviation is to eliminate the danger to users of the road owing to its proximity to the 600 yards range shooting mound. The estimated cost of the work is £3OO SIGNAL HILL ROAD Authority has been granted for sealing the portion of Signal Hill road between Roxburgh street and Blacks road On account of the existence of the tram lines in the street, the sealing will be extended to the kerb on each side. Under usual circumstances, provision is made to leave a strip on each side adjoining the channel for horse traffic, but every endeavour will be made to maintain the surface in a manner to reduce to a minimum the tendency of horses to slip. STREFT WIDENING Authority has been given for caiVying out the work of widening portions of Cooper street, Carson street, and Jsborne terrace on the frontage of a subdivision of lots 12-14, Y.T.P 200, being part of the Glen Estate, where land has been dedicated for the purpose. The estimated cost to the council, providing for the work to be done by scheme 5 labour, is £358, and apnlication lias been made to the Labour Department for approval accordingly. MIDLAND STREET STABLES Authority has been given for tenders to be called in January next for the erection of extensions to the dressing shed and office buildings at the sanitary stables in Midland street. INSTRUCTIONS TO ENGINEER The city engineer has been instructed to act in respect of the following matters: — Cutting gorse on the south-west-ern corner of the Green Island aerodrome site and trimming the gorse hedge on portion of the south side. Estimated cost, £ll.

Returfing a small portion of the footway side margin in Fox street. Estimated cost, £1 10s. Removing a bank in Lucan street to permit of a wall being erected. Estimated cost, £lB. Raising the level of the footpath in portion of Cargill street and adjusting mud tank grating. Estimated cost, £3. Sealing the carriageway at the corner of Albany street and Harbour terrace. Estimated cost, £5. Surface sealing a small portion of Allandale road, at the bend below Coney Hill road, and erecting a protection railing. Estimated cost. £ 14. The engineer has been instructed to record the following matters for consideration with the allocations for next year:— Constructing kerbing and guttering and sealing footway in portion of Richardson street, south side, between Scott street and Thomas Burns street. Estimated cost, £67. Installing two new lights in Islington street, and shifting the lowest existing light up one pole. Grading and sealing the footway in portion of Signal Hill road, east side, between Black’s road and Farquharson street, where widening has been effected. Estimated cost. £4O. Sealing footway and sowing grass margin thereon in Bay View road, north side, between Surrey street and Kirkcaldy street. Estimated cost, £67. WATER COMMITTEE The Water Committee will report as follows: WATER MAIN RENEWALS The committee recommends that authority be granted to proceed with the undermentioned additional main renewal and extension work, all of which comprises the replacement of existing three-inch mains with four-inch mains:— Young street. Adam street, Arthur street, Brown street, Bishop’s road, Elm row (Arthur street to York place), Elm row (Arthur street to Canongate), Duncan street (Arthur street to Canongate), Russell street (Arthur street to York place), Russell street (Arthur street to Canongate), Canongate (Rattray street to Arthur street), Glasgow street. Reid road, Crowder avenue, Joyce avenue, Russell avenue, Carey avenue, Sullivan avenue, Atkinson street, and Fawcett street. The above works comprise a total length of 250£ chains, at a cost of £4949, of which £2807 will be chargeable to renewals and £2142 to extensions. FINANCE COMMITTEE The Finance Committee will report as follows; LIBRARY BOOK STOCK The Library Committee has referred to the Finance Committee a proposal for a special purchase of books for basic stock for the lending department of the library, at an estimated cost of £3400. No specific provision has been made in the current year’s estimates for the expenditure, but the committee is of the opinion, and recommends accordingly, that the expenditure be approved and charged to the vote in the library estimates of £4OOO for extensions to the library building. In conjunction with the Library Committee it has been agreed that the proposed building extensions be deferred for the time being to permit of the proposals being more fully investigated. MOERAKICENTENARY The committee recommends that a grant of £lO be made to the Moeraki Centenary Executive Committee as a contribution from the council towards the cost of the Moeraki centenary celebrations, which are to be held on December 26 next. The amount will be a charge against the unauthorised account. REPAIRS TO TOWN HALL Authority has been granted to invite tenders by public advertisement for re-painting the iron and woodwork of the new Town Hall building and effecting small necessary repairs to the slate roofing at an estimated cost of " 105. SALE OF BUILDING ALLOT- . MENTS The following sales of corporation building allotments have been effected;— To Mr F. Woods, as agent, allotment 26 of the Clyde Hill subdivision, at the price of £205. To Mr C. E. Hunt, for the conversion into freehold of two leases of sections 32 and 33, Marne township, at the price of £lB5.
