YPRES LIONS FOR AUSTRALIA
Two stone lions from the ancient Menin Gate have been presented to the Australian War Memorial Museum by the Burgomaster of Ypres on behalf of his city. The armies of the British Empire, France, the United States and Belgium which fought in the battle of Ypres all marched through the historic Menin Gale. Eighty years ago the old
gates themselves were pulled down and the Menin Gate became a passage way through the ramparts. The lions, now presented by Ypres, are in memory of the Australian soldiers who passed through the gate to battle but never returned.
