HEALTH STAMP CAMPAIGN

DISTRICT EXECUTIVE MEETING A meeting of the Dunedin District Executive of the Health Stamp Campaign was held on Wednesday, when the following were present:— Mrs Kennedy, Sister Lena, Mrs Grant, Mr J. J. Marlow (chairman), and Messrs C. Parr, J. S. Skinner and A. A. Noble (secretary). Mrs Marshall Macdonald, of the Otago Health Camp Association, was also present at the meeting by invitation. It was mentioned by the secretary that, as the St. John’s Ambulance Association was holding a street day collection on Friday next, it might be desirable to defer for a week the health camp street day collection, which had been arranged for December 4. On the motion of Mr Skinner, seconded by Mr Parr, is was decided to have the street day collection on December 11, provided no objection was raised by the City Council. In connection with the first-day cover issued by the District Executive, it was mentioned that, whereas it was thought that the disposal of the original 5000 covers would present some difficulties, the demand was so great that an additional 6000 covers were printed, making a total of 11.000 in all. Of that number, approximately 200 were unsold, and the estimated profit from the sale of the covers, with “ Health ’’ stamps affixed, was approximately £9O. The secretary reported having experienced difficulty in obtaining the services of sufficient girls to canvass business houses for the sale of “ Health ” stamps and for .donations, and that, in the circumstances, he had despatched letters to the business firms in Dunedin which had not been visited by girls, seeking their co-operation either by donation or by the use of “ Health ’’ stamps on the firms’ correspondence. Although the appeal was only distributed on Tuesday, the order forms enclosed with the letters were already being returned, and up to the time of the meeting orders had been received for the sale of stamps to the value of £lO 2s, and donations to the value of £8 7s had been received The secretary reported also having despatched a circular to every householder in Dunedin city and suburbs requesting co-operation in the purchase of “ Health ” stamps from the postmen, who would carry a supply. Already householders were purchasing stamps freely from the .postmen The chairman pointed out the unfavourable position of Dunedin in relation to other cities in regard to the amount collected for health camp funds during the first two weeks of the campaign, and, with a view to augmenting the funds it was suggested that .a Sunday night concert might be held. After some discussion it was decided, as the holding of Sunday night concerts might alienate the sympathy of a number who would otherwise support the campaign to abandon the proposal, and instead to endeavour to arrange a Saturday morning picture show for children. Advice was received from the acting secretary of the Dunedin Rotary Club that Mr H. Halliday had been appointed the club’s representative on the District Executive, and similar advice was to hand from the secretary of the Dunedin Headmasters’ Association to the effect that Mr C. Parr (headmaster, North-East Valley School, Dunedin) had been appointed the association’s representative on the executive. Mrs J. Kirkland, of the Women’s Institute, advised that a delegate would be appointed to the executive The secretary reported having communicated with Mrs A. Cameron 55 Spottiswoode street. Anderson’s Bay. concerning the nomination of a member of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union to the executive. but so far a reply had not been received It was reported that applications for the placing of children in health camps which had been received from Lawrence and Clyde had been conveyed to the Central Council for action. ’ ■
