The monthly Tneeting of the Green Island Women’s Institute was held in the Masonic Hall on Tuesday evening. Mrs Wilkie, president, gave a report on the movement to have a medical practitioner in Green Island. Two demonstrations were given, one by Mrs Mason, on quilting, and the other, by Mrs Callander, on making fancy handkerchiefs. Miss Miller proposed a vote of thanks. A competition, “ Something suitable for a Christmas gift —was won by Mrs Callander, with Mrs Mason second. The Maori Hill Mothers’ Choir provided the social entertainment and was thanked by Miss M’Lean. Mrs Orr was convener of the social items. The hostesses were Mesdames Bell, Brown, Murdoch, J. Geddes and Orr, and Misses Smellie, Walker and M. Smellie. At the November meeting of the Cave Institute, Mrs Rich presided. She made special reference to the presence of Miss Mabel Foster and Miss Lorna Clark, and, on behalf of the members, presented them with a floral tribute. Mrs West, of Fairlie, had on view a display of novelties for Christmas. “April Showers.” a play written by Philip Johnson, was presented during the afternoon. The motto was “ Do not waste time, for that is the stuff life is made of,” and the roll call, “My pet aversion in housework.” A competition for the best Christmas gift costing not more than 2s 6d was won by Mrs Whittaker, with Mrs Cowan second and Mrs M’Stay third. Mrs Ferguson gave an amusing play-reading. The hostesses were Mesdarnes Gowan. Hopkins, Faris, Ferguson, Downing. Familton and Diver. Mr Graham Macpherson gave a demonstration on icing Christmas cakes.

Mrs A. A. Mays presided at the meeting of the Eveline Institute on Thursday afternoon. The motto was “ Never carry two faces under one hat,” and the roll call “In what way has the institute been a benefit to you? ’’ The competitions resulted as follows: — Chocolate cake—Mrs Melton 1, Mrs Ross 2, Miss Carrodus 3; home-made toy—Mrs Corlett 1, Mrs G. Sherwin 2, Mrs Sproat 3; best lettuce—Mrs Anderson 1, Miss Carrodus 2, Mrs W. F. Kerr 3. The hostesses were Mesdarnes Ure, Webb, Whyte, Wood. Walker, Amies and M’Crae. The Rev. A. H. Nordmeyer, M.P., gave a talk outlining the national health and superannuation scheme under consideration by the Government at the present time. Mrs Mays presented Mrs Nordmeyer with a charming floral tribute. Mrs Amies and Mrs Souness sang a duet. Mrs Boyd being at the piano. The Seacliff Institute met in the Public Hall on Thursday of last week, Mrs Stewart, the president, being in the chair. The motto was “ Don’t expect life to smile at you unless you smile first.” The roll call was “Recipe for a cold sweet.” Mrs Roughan, of Puketeraki, gave a demonstration on “Italian quilting.” A social hallhour was devoted to examining a display of Christmas novelties. The hostesses —Mesdarnes Stewart and O’Hara and Miss Stewart —arranged a programme of community singing and items.

The Puerua Institute met on Wednesday, the president (Mrs G. Grant) being in the chair. The motto was “ Nature provides us with two ears but only one mouth.” The roll call was “What improvements would you like at our meetings? ” A competition “A pat of butter,” was won by Miss P. Grant, with Mrs J. Scott second in the senior section, and Miss C. Grant first and Miss A. Todd second in the junioi section. Miss C. Grant demonstrated the making of a “ Fido ” dog. The results of the year’s competition were Miss P. Grant 1 and Mrs Caldwell second in the senior section, and Miss S. Mason first and Misses C. Grant and E. Scott second (equal) in the junior section. Hostesses were Mrs J. Scott and Miss P. Grant.
